Sorry jonniboy, misread your post. I get about 400 Euro a WEEK, not a month in Buch. I think you could probably earn more than 400 Euro a month in the larger towns in Transylvania (Sibiu, Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov, etc.) if you were self-employed. Not sure how many language schools there are in those towns though. |
I had a nosy in Brasov when I was there in 2003, there was only one language centre at that time and they were paying 150 euro a month (!) I'd expect inflation/EU membership has pushed that up. My friend in Cluj told me there was more work there due to the University etc but that was six years back and I've no more up to date info. |

I think the main difference now is that Romanian professionals are now getting decent salaries. A lot of my students get salaries of around 20K Euro per year (before tax) and because they have often inherited properties or bought them when prices were cheap, they have a lot of disposible income. When I came here in 2004, there was little chance of finding private students as even a well-qualified engineer was only getting about 300 Euro a month.
The language schools probably still pay peanuts but certainly if you could get a gig at a private/international high school and/or privates you could probably bring in enough to live comfortably, depending on your dependants and lifestyle.
Also there have been quite a few big companies who have moved to Romania in the past few years. A few have now backed out again due to the crisis, but they'll probably be back. Transylvania has good airports (Timisoara, Cluj, Targu Mure, Sibiu), cheap labour, cheap land, EU membership - so makes quite an attractive location for major companies. The road/rail infrastructure still sucks, but when they (finally) finish the highway it'll be pretty good. |
