In one of my very first lessons here, a few years ago, there was a coursebook unit about the seven wonders of the modern world.

I asked the (in-company, 4 sts) group if there is a modern 'wonder' in Poland that they can think of.

A very serious and religious young woman said that there was the new basilica at Lichen, which has 365 windows, 52 doors and 7 altars.

One of her colleagues then said that there should be 666 windows and a horned goat on the altar, at which point the young lady slammed her book shut and ran out of the room. At least the lesson finished early.

Trying to master the difference in the pronunciation (in British English) of "can" and "can't" with my elementary level students.... resulting in 12 people shouting what sounded a lot like "c*nt!" at me across the classroom.

It hadn't occurred to me that that would happen, so I was completely taken by surprise and fell about laughing, and of course nobody knew why...

Tonight a woman said her father goes to the church choir every week. However, she pronounced it *beep* and it was all I could do to keep from cracking up as I corrected her pronunciation. When one guy explained what she had said everybody burst out laughing.

Popping out for a beer during the 15 minute break at a kiosk or the Polish Director/owner who tipped cleaning fluid into my coffee and said;'That'll cure your hangover'.

Heady days of the mid 90's.
