If it is controversial and political, a Gulf employer may very well not allow it... and certainly not let you use their students or name for research.

Here's a recent job post in the UAE--they're looking for PhD qualified researchers. No idea what the salary is, but I would think it should be decent (20K dirhams/month and up would be my guess).

A PhD in applied linguistics is marketable, the same in the humanities less so (See Benton's "Just don't go" advice at http://chronicle.com/jobs/news/2009/01/2009013001c.htm )

If money isn't an issue, or if you can get a scholarship or teaching/research assistantship, I'd say go for it. And I'd recommend the UK for their postgraduate degrees since you'll be able to work on a research agenda without having to take to much more coursework (assuming you already have an MA/MS degree).

UK uni's will also allow you to spend, let's say, a year in residence planning your research, then return to ME (or wherever) to complete any "fieldwork" components of your project which means you may be able to continue teaching while working to complete your PhD.

Good luck! Find a topic worth investigating, do the research, write it up in a several hundred page thesis, defend the thesis, revise, and then collect that parchment!

I would advise you to go ahead with your PhD and the topic. It's very rare to find people doing a PhD for the sake of improving their knowledge/practices. You sound to be intrinsically motivated, a major factor when one is doing a PhD. Go ahead and all the best.

You may want to make that email address not clickable... or so easy for the spammers to pick up - they have programs that mine boards like this. I would change the @ to AT... and add spaces.
