The above information is interesting but confusing. I wish to teach in China but my understanding is that work visas will not be issued to anyone 60 or over (as in my home country). However, if I already live in China, am over 60 and am applying for visa/permit renewal, it's a matter of pot luck as to area, who you know, the school etcetc. Have I got it right?

I am 59, hitting 60 later in the year.
The question is, am I wasting my time applying for a work visa etc in my home country or should I just respond to ads, as on eslcafe, and just try for pot luck?
I have many other questions pertaining to living conditions, costs etc but will try a more appropriate thread for those.
Many thanks in advance.

Just apply for jobs - if you don't try you have zero chance.

The relative difficulty in finding teachers and relationships with the authorities will affect how schools/colleges approach their hiring.

Give it a try - rules are flexible in many cases.

In my experience, I seem to be teaching the police (PSB) what the rules are and they go along with what I say. Physical exam - police wanted it when I renewed my contract - I explained the rule - they said, "okay, you don't need it then." Other examples as well ...

Point is, just apply for jobs, then go for it.
