| Prod: the poor don't have an identity? In my humble experience, that was the affluent. |

Dear eha,
I agree completely. In my experience, the rich tend to lose their personal/traditional/cultural/etc/ identities, borrowing/buying from what's globally available whereas the poor, unable to afford such consumerism, are stuck with what they have.
Regards,

| Although, and I may be in a minority here, Beirut has the best of both worlds. Finding a teaching job privately may take some time but I was offered a position at the Aerican English Institue 9Ithink that was the title) opposite the American University. The lifestyle is very cosmopolitan and the people, if your are a foreigner, very accomodating. It's interesting to note that everyone will talk to you openly if you are not Lebanese because you are somehow 'neutral'. On the other hand finding friendly people is quite hard (most Beiruti residents can be quite snobbish0. Nonetheless there's nothing like have a beer with the local intelligenstia in one of the hotels and getting into a real, 'good natured', debate. On the downside, there's the obvious issues over the security situation in the south as well as the high cost of living. Also, you can't beat the nightlife on Sharia Monot!!! Nonetheless, I would recommend it for the careful, 'grown-up', traveller, if you know what I mean. |
