A friend told me a story yesterday of a person who applied to ADEC with "Muslim" as their religion on their CV and were later called to be more specific.

They ask about the sect of the religion for security clearance. It is routine.

"Look at the benefits - but with a PhD - look at other options"

What are other options? Thanks.

You have not been at all clear on this person's credentials or teaching experience. Both of those would control pay and benefits.

Other options? Something related to the field of study?

As I said, if this person has no credentials to teach English, no CELTA - no MA in Applied Linguistics... only an unrelated PhD, I don't know who would hire him/her to teach English.

So... why have you been keeping the important details secret? Laughing That brings us back to merely the question of the thesis topic - which adorabilly's example sounds positive. One can never know for sure until an application gets looked at...

Was s/he teaching ESL or in the English Department or Freshman Writing? This person needs to look into the various programs at places like UAEU, HCT, ZU, and AUS and see what appeals. They all have good websites that include position openings.

Employers like to recruit PhD's where they can for the prestige, but what you end up teaching will not necessarily match - eg, a Maths PhD I knew here found themselves teaching something called Math which in fact was basic numeracy, or what I call "sums".

I declared myself "Christian" on all documents, which cost me a certain pang as I am not a believer, but all it means in this context is that I am a non-Muslim (can get a drinks license and enter a pork supply shop... whisky and bacon - let's party!) and one of the tolerated "People of the Book".

I have no idea what would happen if someone put "Jewish", but on the Identity Card website it was one possible option to check, so presumably it's acceptable (Bahaii was another, as was "other").

I don't think it would be advisable to put atheist, somehow.

This has consistently been the advice here. For the many "secular" teachers, we put Christian... whether our parents were Christian or Jewish or whatever.

I've always put down "Christian, non-practicing". That covers the fact that I was born to a Christian family and raised in a Christian church..but ithe "non-practicing" assuages my conscience as an adult non-believer. To me it also indicates that I am not in the country with the intent of proselytizing.

Well, the true People of the Book and believers in Jesus do not drink Whisky or eat bacon:
In the book of Leviticus, chapter 11, it is said: "And the swine,. . . he is unclean to you. Of the flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcasses shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you. "

In Deuteronomy 14:7-8: The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.

Well, the Jews are tolerated people of the book like the true Christians.

Well, Teta Mia, at least you, you are frank with God, and may be one day you will see the secret light from that window in your dreams.
Good luck! Laughing

So glad someone asked this question. I need to fill a form and was wondering what to put down. I have now put down "Christian" in all my documents. For what it's worth, I consider myself a "cultural Christian," meaning that I'm a humanist who still subscribes to the Western cultural heritage, etc.
