This means they're company holidays, not personal holidays, and so they don't count towards the ten paid personal days you're legally permitted to take after you've worked six months. |
"planned" can be misleading in a way. They are not company holiday days, but pre allocated paid days off. Maybe it says in our contract that our holiday starts on the 20th July, but the school holiday starts on the 15th. Our contract says we are obligated to work but instead of us going to sit behind a desk for those 5 days (something our BOE seems to like to do to our JETs), they allocate 5 of our paid days off to them. It does suck, but at least we get full pay for those 5 days as opposed to the partial pay we get for the rest of the summer (no, we don't have to attend work on the partial pay days).
I'm lucky because mine actually fall on days that are technically not school summer holiday days. They are not lesson days but all the teachers and students will still be in school on the days that I have been assigned as paid days off. |

That's is the best case situation. Unless you are sick or have things you have to do (companies have to allow you time off to get your visa renewed, for example), then you normally won't be allowed to take vacation during school. The 'other five' are probably going to go for 'sick days' (which should be listed as a separate thing, but often aren't) so if you get sick and are off for a week, then that's the rest of your vacation, and if you later get sick again, they may just not pay you. |
