1. I am not ignorant. I'm black.

So let's get this straight. You say you're black (which may or may not be true), yet you hope the OP isn't a black person looking for work in Shenzhen because it's not easy for black teachers to find jobs in such a big city so they should stay away from there and stick to the smaller cities which are the only ones in China that hire black people?
I don't want to put words in your mouth, but isn't that what you wrote? Why would any intelligent person, regardless of the color of their skin, accept such fallacious advice? MLK, Jr. must be rolling over in his grave!

He's talking about people who want to earn money by teaching English, not about people who come to China and think they can change the world, which especially in China would be a foolish thing to think. (I think this is straight talking...)

Well, the 'guesthouses' behind the Shangri-La along Jianshe Lu are...brothels. Good night to a long night of loud goings-on in the neighbourhood.

There is a youth hostel in Shenzhen, but it's a long way out of town, in a place called Happy Valley in the Overseas Chinese Town.
Not quite. Brothels in China are actually "Saunas." I have never heard any people screwing when I have stayed in the hotels on Jianshe Road. But even if I did, isn't that something that you would expect in a hotel? And has anyone ever screwed so loud and so long that you couldn't sleep? Not likely.

I hate to break it to you, but people in China don't know who MLK is. And even if he had lived in China (and lived until he was 500 years old), it would not have helped. (Chinese people are very grudging about changing their ways. I could imagine an ant somewhere deciding to move the whole Sahara desert one grain at a time a complete distance of 100 miles. I think that he would have succeeded in his whole task BEFORE Chinese people came up with new ways of doing things.) But my "advice" is gained from experience. REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE with trying to find jobs. And you can test this, if you want to, in the following way (assuming that you are a black person or you have photos of some black person): 1) Choose 40 places to which you'd like to apply. 2)Break them into 2 lists of 20. 3) Send out the first 20 applications without a photo and send out the second 20 with photos. 4) When the first 20 come back and ask for a photo, I want you to see how many of them DON'T respond when they find out you are black.

I'm sure that I'm black. I live with this burden EVERY SINGLE DAY. No need to fake it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for following the content of my message. At least someone understood before writing.

I have opened a thread on why Chinese don't like to hire blacks to get more input on this issue.

Most Chinese university students do know about MLK and many have even memorized his "I Have a Dream" speech.

It seems to me they admire him for his willingness to overcome discrimination, yet discriminate against black folks just like you pointed out in the other topic.

It's a shame, but it's the way it is here.

It's funny though because I once had a Nigerian friend in Guangzhou and all of the girls were interested in his skin and wanted to touch it, yet they walked around with umbrellas to keep their skin from getting dark like Mr. Smith pointed out. A dichotomy if there ever was one.

You continue to make blanket statemtents that may or may not be true. Most of my uni students know who MLK is. The point is it doesn't matter. I know, and since you're black, you know. I understand your point of view, but most teachers who know the ropes of EFL teaching in Asia are aware 1) that there are less black teachers here and 2) that it's harder for black teachers to find jobs here. But these odds didn't stop you or deter you from gaining your real life experience, so why should they stop or deter any other black teacher who wants to live and work in Shenzhen? That sounds illogical to me. We ALL need to have our OWN life experiences.

PLEASE tell us you're NOT living and teaching in Shenzhen! I think I heard about a black uni teacher here who sent his CV in with a white headshot that wasn't his, got an interview, and then when he showed up he was told he wasn't right for the job. He used some insider connections to get past the discrimination and got hired and the last I heard he was doing well. The point? Why should any black teacher who's determined to get a teaching job in Shenzhen follow such defeatist advice? I doubt there are many blacks who choose to teach in China and elsewhere in Asia who are actually that weak in character.

I never said anything about changing the world. I doubt there are many EFL teachers out there doing that. If people want to earn money in China by teaching English, the best places to do it are big cities like Shenzhen, where there's always more money to be made. Where's the logic, adw?
