Dear veiledsentiments,
Well, practicing a little hypocrisy on one's visa application is actually a good introduction to life in the Magic Kingdom, where one often has either to keep silent about certain matters or be extremely "diplomatic."
Regards,

VS, funny that you should mention this, I was just about to begin a similar thread.
I don't anticipate discussing religion in class. It sounds like a topic to be avoided if anything. But should a teacher get that curveball question -"what religion are you?", is it better to grit the teeth and lie?
I had a similar experience one summer in Egypt when my Egyptian colleagues - those that weren't very close - asked me about my religion, and I found it easier to say Christian than atheist, though it ate me up on the inside. From my understanding, people of the book with a similar God are more compatible, despite historical/political divides, than one with a God and one without.
Is it safe to assume KSA is no different in this regard? |

Ideally, you just dont answer the question and move on to the next topic.

If you're asking whether Saudis respect Christians more than atheists, the answer is a definite 'yes'. Even Jews have traditionally been respected as 'people of the book' - the contemporary antagonism between Jews and Muslims mainly stems from the 20th century establishment of a Jewish state on Palestinian land.
That said, as the last poster advised, it's really best not to get into religious discussions at all. If your students ask what religion you are - and they might - simply say "Christian". Of course, you do have the option of not answering, but this might arouse undue suspicion among your students. Far better to give a short and 'inoffensive' answer and try to move the discussion on as quickly as you can. |
