It's interesting that in most places, male faculty (except for Nationals) are usually required to wear shoes and socks while the women can get away with darn near anything except plastic shower flip flops.

Sorry, the only guy I know who wore sandals without socks had a toe injury which allowed him to only wear sandals for about 6 weeks - it was either that or find a replacement for him while he was on medical leave.

At HCT, technically men are supposed to wear long sleeved shirts. Depending on your campus/supervisor - short sleeves are not "officially noticed" by supervisors or management - especially at the men's campuses.

For work you will have to wear socks with your sandals but given that you will have smart trousers on (chinos ok but NOT jeans usually) it's not such a fashion disaster. I think some employers absolutely insist on closed town shoes for male teaching staff; others turn a blind eye to solid looking sandals.

Oh Please... socks with sandals can be nothing but a fashion disaster no matter what else one is wearing... and that goes for males or females. Laughing Laughing

I can only imagine what a pair of 'solid sandals' looks like. Is that like the equivalent of business class sneakers? Smile Is there even such a thing? How much do sandals cost anyway?

How about those weird shoes that are kinda like sandals but made of a plastic-like material? They are in bright colors and have holes around them. I started seeing them on college campuses in the US in the last couple of years; weird looking shoes. They look like oversized plastic clogs!

I am guessing that when you say chinos, you might mean like khaki (colored) pants? I can't imagine wearing dark colors in the summer, especially in the heat. But if there's A/C everywhere, I suppose that wouldn't be a problem.

Is Giordano expensive?

When I was in Shanghai, it was a pretty upscale, but the prices were really good - like 5 to 15 for a nice shirt.

solid sandals... well with a lot more foot coverage than what we used to call Jesus sandals in the UK. Sometimes sort of woven from sraps an inch or more wide, so in the heat better than a fully closed town shoe

Plus sizes are avalable for women (Evans; a range in Spalsh; and misc other shops) but you can get anything tailored.

Giordano is not really expensive here, sort of mid range.

You can get those colourful crocs here, and cheap fake ones; I know people who wear them for work but they are mostly in non teaching posts or are full professors who aren't scared of anyone. Not recommended at least not until you see what your close colleagues wear.
