As I recall, "malu" also means "shy."

I remember hearing people say "jangan malu" to tell their kids not to be so shy.

Indonesians frequently use malu to mean "embarrassed" -- not really "ashamed." When they use ashamed in their English translation, I ask them if it's real shame or simply embarrassment. And then they're happy that they've learned a new word!
