Abortions are illegal but like most things illegal on Taiwan they are widely available, most major hospitals do them.
Condoms are only sold in one size (small) as the government has a regulation that states all men have the same size *beep* as theirs.
Racism and bigotry are widely accepted on Taiwan so feel free to be an idiot in public. The fact that this type of moronic behavior is at the core of so many social and political problems has never stopped the local government nor far too many of Taiwan's more influential people.
Welcome to Taiwan,
A.

Abortion IS legal in Taiwan. And the RU-486 abortion pill has also been available for almost two years now.

Sorry, folks, I couldn't help it! This is just too funny... Anybody got a cool, comparable website from a WOMAN'S perspective?

Ladies, you can read those links if you want to see the attitude of MANY foreign males living in Asia, and non-Western countries in general. I come across them time and again, and they're nice enough people in most respects. They just tend to have these same reactionary attitudes about Western women not being proper gf/wife material. Like I said, they're nice enough and easy to make friends with, but don't bother trying to date them...they're not interested. If you still don't believe me, here's a case in point with a lot of supportive comments from men posting on Dave's ESL Cafe: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=1161&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

There are various brands and sizes of condoms available on the market here. Some of them are famous brands such as Durex, others are local brands. Every 7-11 around the island stocks at least three different kinds in my experience and I have no trouble finding larger sizes.

Funny how so many foreign guys over here are always bragging about how the condoms are too small for them and also how many lovers they have...

It's no wonder so many foreign women share workingvaca's opinion.

Of course W.C. is correct as abortion is legal so long as the woman seeking the abortion can match certain criteria.
If a woman lies or obtains an abortion without fullfilling the stated criteria set down by the Republic of China goverment, she is having an illegal abortion.
The so called abortion pill is in fact an after sex contraceptive and that is why it was permitted to be sold over the counter. That and the fact the government is going broke subsidizing so many illegal abortions.

"The Abortion Law stipulates that women seeking an abortion would have to prove that they or their spouse, or members of their immediate family, suffered from a genetic disorder or that they or their spouse suffered from a communicable disease, a rare illness or a mental disorder.

The law also states that any woman seeking to have an abortion would have to prove that the pregnancy would endanger her life, her mental or physical health, or that her baby would be born with a deformity."

There have been many proposed amendments to change that law but to the best of my knowledge none have been passed into law by the Legislative Yuan.
As I stated above. Like most things illegal on Taiwan, abortions are widely available at most large hospitals and some smaller clinics.

I am not a mind reader so I can not make assertions as to why so many men would complain about the one size fits all policy of the R.O.C government on Taiwan.

A quick check at the corner 7/11 proves my point. There are many brands, types and shapes of condoms available but they all have the Government mandated size of 52mm(-/+2mm) size restriction clearly stated on all of the boxes.
Sorry Brian,
A.

"Workingvaca," you haven't met the majority of ex-pat males, nor even a signifigant minority (this also assumes you are extremely extroverted and meet more people than average). Please stop the offensive negative stereotyping of male members of the ex-pat community. We are not all the same, nor are "MANY" of us the same. Just as I don't accept sexist attitudes from guys, I'm not about to accept it from women either (and no the fact that some men engage in such childishness doesn't justify you to follow suit). If you don't think you are excessively generalizing/dehumanising, here's a litmus test: take ex-pat male out of your statements and substitute black, jew, gay or any other group in its place. If you wouldn't make such a generalisation about any other group, then you shouldn't make such statements about mine.

Mozilla, please take care not to tar us all with your own brush. While I can't doubt that your circle of friends act in the way that you have reported on this board, not all of us fit that category. The fact that we deny it to be the case isn't us in 'denial' but simply us stating that it isn't the way that we act or feel. I think that this type of sweeping generalization has been the reason for such strong objection to some of the content of this thread.
