Dear Stephen,
I knew a guy who came to the Kingdom from Japan who stayed for ten years, but Saudi was his last overseas job. He was "getting on" in years.
Regards,

| Arrive with as light a cargo as possible. With job security--and personal security--as volitile as it is in KSA, you never know when you'll have to make a hasty exit. |

Dear sheiker,
Let me begin by admitting that it HAS been a while (2003) since I was in the Kingdom. I am, however, still in regular contact with about half a dozen people who are there now. From what they say, I believe they would likely consider your statement - " . . . as volitile as it is in KSA, you never know when you'll have to make a hasty exit" - to be overly "alarmist."
Of course nowhere, especially in the Middle East, can be described as "stable", but I'll be interested in reading what, if anything, any of the "regulars" on here who are in the Kingdom now have to say about your warning.
Regards,
John |

as the Kingdom is entirely tax free and haggling is an established manner of trade, i cannot see an reason why you should ship appliances/furniture etc. You would have no warranty on any appliance that you shipped in too.
I have done the Saudi/UAE thing, and learned that for any major purchase i would send the office tea boy, a Bangladeshi. He was very good at getting me (a white first worlder), a good third world discount and he was very happy with the commission I paid him.
If you don't ship your appliances and are in the Tokyo area, let me know, i might buy some gear from you, particularly keen on a convection oven right now. |
