| I didn't actually mean you thought you needed photos for the marriage registration, steki- you just happened to mention photos in the same post, and I have seen on other forums people posting who think they will be interviewed and have to show photos at the city office when they get married, so I just wanted to clarify it. |

Gotcha. Actually, I was confused as well. Different people told me different things. City hall gave us the correct information. |

I'm an American. I got married in Gifu prefecture and our town needed a translation of my birth certificate as a substitute for the koseki I don't have. |
I'm surprised your passport didn't serve that purpose, but as you said, there may be idiotic variation depending on the immigration office. Stupid, and it shouldn't happen, but it does. |

City hall wanted info on my family, which my wife translated into katakana. My passport doesn't have that. Oh well. I got married. Mission accomplished. |
