Strictly speaking, there is no "minimum salary" for a work visa. People seem to believe in the myth that it must be 250,000 yen/month, but that is not true.
|
It was true up until 1989. That's when the minimum wage requirement was removed. It's one of those things that has lingered in gaijin urban legend, much like "Japanese toothpaste doesn't have fluoride" - once true 30+ years ago, but not now, and yet people still trot it out. |
People like to trot it out because unless the toothpaste is marked フッ素 then it doesn't have fluoride.

What? Not all toothpaste here has fluoride.
To many foreigners, it's just crazy. It's like having to look carefully at a carton of chocolate milk to determine if it actually has milk in it because for some reason companies are permitted to call their product 'chocolate milk' even if it contains no milk whatsoever. Similarly, in Japan, companies are allowed to call their product 'toothpaste' even if it has no fluoride. |

I think you might find that this is the case in many countries outside Japan as well... |

| Anyways, thanks for the help, folks. It sounds I can line up 200,000 yen a month to maintain a self-sponsored visa if I work on myself and get a special corporate niche. |
