Well, John, you well know that some of us TEFLers have been a part of that damage as we taught (and teach) the military. One only hopes that the security is better nowadays...
Well, if by better you mean RSAF and National Guard security guards sitting on the ground and eating tamis and foul when they're supposed to be standing upright with their machine guns ready to fire, then yeah, security has gotten a lot better. Uh...

My former students tell me that what is interesting is not so much the fact that it happened but rather the fact that it got widely reported. However, I don't know if it is a signal that the government is becoming more open or if it is a signal that this kind of thing is becoming so widespread that they cannot keep it all under wraps any longer.

You mean it's possible that the Saudis have been giving us a false sense of security. Who would have thunk it?

If things get more political and attacks happen (has been argued somewhere in the news, this is likely to continue to be assassination attempts) then westerners may become collateral targets of general animosity. There is an undercurrent of hostility towards westerners, and attacks sort of heat up the general environment and create the potential for people acting out.

This has certainly been the pattern in the States!

Ah yes. Abortion clinics, Holocaust museums, and army recruitment centers are not safe, so long as there are crazy people infected with religious doctrine out there be they Christian or Muslim.

Quoted from desultude's referenced article:
Quote:
Mohammed Al-Aoufi, a repentant Saudi member of Al-Qaeda, claimed last March that Yemen has become a rear camp for terrorist operations in neighbouring countries, in particular Saudi Arabia, indicating that Al-Qaedas new strategy consists of hitting oil installations and security buildings in Saudi Arabia in addition to US interests, then retreating to Yemen in order to minimize damage to their network.

So if you work for a defense company or you work for Aramco, then be ready for some action, Jack.

Also from the same article:
Quote:
Riyadh issued in February a list of 85 wanted suspects. Analysts say that many of them are in Yemen, including some who were sent back to Saudi Arabia after being released from Guantanamo prison camp and some who have been through the rehabilitation program "Munasaha" to reform militants.

I believe this is what the CIA refers to as blowback. Perhaps we've been too lenient with these people. Leave it to the soft-hearted Christians not to kill their enemy.

Also from the same article:
Quote:
One of the main reasons that will boost the sympathy with al-Qaeda is the widening circle of corruption, looting of public funds, rampant poverty, unemployment in the worlds number one oil exporting nation and the concentration of wealth and power within the royal family," he added.

Or maybe the Saudi royals should get rid of that Lamborghini dealership in Riyadh that they use to buy their spoiled children sports cars and start spreading out the wealth among the people. God forbid someone call me a socialist!

Watched the news on an Arabic channel last Tuesday and they showed footage of the room where it took place. It was a mess with shards of various objects strewn about, etc. However, what I was not prepared for was footage of body parts scattered all over the room. Such scenes don't faze me at all, but I just didn't expect the Saudis to show that.

An arm in one corner, a leg in another, a hand in another, and a limbless torso in the middle of the room... with raw flesh hanging out from each body part. Yes, that's what they showed. Extreme. Closeups. Of. The. Flesh. Shocked

is this a sign that there will be another round of terrorism in the Kingdom?

Well, the prince Mohamed is not anyone, he is the son of the Interior Minister, and the tsar of the Magic Kingdom's security.
This is a serious sign that there will be other hot balloons to explode in the Magic Kingdom, especially with what is happening in Yemen and Iraq.
