| Yes, same job. Only job since I've been here, and yes all bridges have been burned. There was no way of fixing the problem. After multiple attempts, I just couldn't win. It was pretty much their way or no way. It was an ugly situation. Do you think it would be wise to go to the authorities? I am ready to just pick up and leave, but not for a few more days as I am already kinda settled and can't just run in the middle of the night. I'm just wondering if anyone knows about the problems I could face when exiting the country. I have my residency permit sticker in my passport (which is what you receive after the z visa expires), but the school said they would be canceling my visa right away. Does that mean the authorities will know what's up and not let me leave without pay ing a fine or something? I don't know what to. So stressed out. |

This doesn't precisely answer your question but if you're visa is invalid, they will charge you a fine for each day you stay in the country afterwards. The resident permits is what allows multiple entries into the country but once you leave, I don't think it would matter anymore.
Why not see if you can change your visa from a Z visa to a different type (one that you can get on your own). Since you're close to Hong Kong, maybe see if you can do it there until you are able to leave China. The only problem with this is with your apartment- whether it's school provided or not. |

If you're going - go now - just staying means you'll be working for free - if your employers know you're off, there's a huge chance they aren't going to pay you a single penny more - regardless of how many hours you're owed.
As for visa - well the school is calling a bluff - they have taken official responsibility for you - they can't just let you become an illegal alien. If they don't have your passport - and have taken it into the PSB to get a big canceled sticker on relevant page (or however they visibly cancel RP's) - have not given you official notification of a firing with date - then all you have to do is walk through the passport gate at Lou Wen (you're in Shenzhen) - and you're in HK. Visa officials aren't going to stop you - there aren't huge manhunts for errant FT's - they can't care less what you're doing - as long the document in your passport gives you the right of exit and has no official stamps that cancel out original expiry dates
But like I say - if you're going to go - go now - otherwise you're employer will keep twisting the situation and you may be working for free - or open to threat and abuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember if you're teaching huge classes and doing crazy hours then there's a lot of money involved with your classes - the Chinese often become much more abusive and irrational in situations where they see a large profit slipping away!!!!!!!
Plan B - is to mimic bird flu - that'll get 'em to act quickly!!!!
Seriously - don't panic - just get out of it. |

Roxanna,
Paid $15,000? For what? Did you actually receive $15,000? |

| I actually already up and quit the job. I am not working there as of 2 days ago. My loss in this whole situation is 2 weeks pay, which I know I will not be seeing a penny of. When I told them I was quiting they said your visa will be cancelled right away. So, I guess my quetion was as long as I have my passport in my hand with my Residence Permit sticker in tact, am I free to leave without having to pay any fines? Or could the cancellation already be in the computer system at customs? I'm wondering how long it takes for the cancelation to go through at PSB. I'm sure they would have to file all the necesary paper work etc. etc. I kind of have to stay in China for 2 more days (for personal reasons), so I'm just hoping it's ok. I also hear you can go to the PSB and request a 7 day visa (so you have some time to pack and leave) after your visa has been revoked by an employer. Does anyone know anything about that? Thank you so much for the help! oh and for the curious, ya pay was a little over $20,000 a year...not bad for china...still definitely not worth it. |

From what I understand, as long as your employer is only canceling your visa, not your residence permit, you can stay until your residence permit expires.
And good for you...12000 RMB per month for 50 hour weeks works out to about 9 bucks an hour. Get the hell out of here and find something better. |

It's the same thing. The residence permit is your visa. If you're planning on leaving the country in just a few days, don't worry about it. Even if Hu Jintao himself gave the order to cancel it, and you got snagged at the airport, what are they going to do, fine you for two days overstay? That's like 200rmb. Well, maybe a missed flight too... but it ain't going to happen.
The main thing is to make sure you get away from the school. If they don't know where you are, they can't harass you. |

Well Dude,
You never tell a school you are running. |
If you are terminating a contract early, it should have a clause for notice - 1 months or often 2 months notice. Give notice, and leave then, unless the school's management are really appalling. Only if you really can't trust them and they've demonstrated that, is it morally acceptable to just run.
As for "cancelling", yes in some cases a school can make it either difficult or impossible for you to get another school in the same province, but they can't stop you leaving or impose some kind of fine at the border. That's ridiculous. |

| I believe that it is 500 RMB per day, if you were to overstay your visa. There is a limit as to what the Chinese government can charge you. This topic, has been on Dave's before. Best of luck. |

just wanted to return and say thanks for everyones input. Even though the school new I was leaving, I was still able to exit the country without any problems (I left Monday afternoon).
They had made threats and demanded I pay $2000 US, but it appears to all have been idle.
Good luck to the other poster who is in a similar situation. I took the advice of the others and left as soon as possible. I would suggest the same to others.
thx again. |
