My decision to move here wasn't based on a Hollywood movie, I also read a book about the formation of the UAE and its people, its culture, its history, amazing architecture and was fascinated --- this is why I am teaching here --besides the money (im not going to lie). The shorts thing was a bad example. I don't run around in shorts and mini skirts---I wear long skirts and when wearing jeans make sure my bootie is covered by my shirt ( I know the drill). Not a big deal. You have to find out what the deal breakers are for you personally. There is no way in hell I could handle living in Saudia Arabia, Iraq, ....Maybe if I was a man, I would say different.
With that being said, I wish I had job searched longer than 2 months and had found out the differences about Dubai and Abu Dhabi before-- like the original poster here. I guess the lesson is research and when you think you've researched enough, ... you haven't....research some more. |

That is the key and even then one is likely to choose the wrong one. That is life. But, unless you are 59 years old when you take that first job, one just goes on to the next job (once the contract is finished) and tries out the next spot.
Not to mention that one often finds that what one thinks one wants... isn't... once you get it. (explains why divorce is so common)
Even asking on a board like this may not help because it is mainly opinion in choosing between two such similar places as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Excluding Saudi - which I wasn't interested in - if I made a list of Gulf cities that I would like to work in... Dubai would be at the bottom of the list. I didn't like it in the 90's and all the things that I didn't like about it then have merely become worse. Middle East Disneyland with horrendous traffic... ugh.
And yes, I agree completely that the experience for single women in the Middle East is very different from men.

No. Actually it's Scary why all threads lead to HCT.
It's not just Scary. According to recent posts, it's Jeanette over at the Woman's as well! Who's next? Who's next?
It's the TRUTH! Or, would you want me to talk about traces of unprofessionalism again? |

I dont see what this has got to do with the original post.
Youre hijacking yet another post with your personal vendetta against HCT.
Why dont you keep your HCT posts specific to HCT postings and related questions?
I mean whos this Jeanette and what has she got to do with UAE? Yes, but Abu Dhabi or Dubai? ? |

I like living in Abu Dhabi, but I love visiting Dubai. They're only an hour and a half apart - choose the job (if you have the luxury of choice) with the better benefits package and live there. You can always visit the other place. |
