I'm still intrigued as to how and why anyone would not leave their flat in 11 years. I gather it's something to do with being a tortured genius, or maybe related to 9/11 somehow. but I'm still stumped. I think the people deserve to know!

Anyone would think the OP had admitted to some sort of disgusting crime, the way he is being treated on here, being hectored to justify his lifestyle choices which amount to - wait for it, staying at home and harmlessly minding his own business. How dare he!

Do you really think going to a bar (which let's face it can't be that different to any bar in any city) and emptying bottle after bottle of Efes really makes you more interesting and worthy people? Just grow up. I like going to bars sometimes but am not under any sort of illusion that this is somehow contributing to my self-development. You have no idea how the OP has spent his time at home, perhaps he has written a book, invented something or otherwise used his time productively. Perhaps he hasn't. Either way it is his business.

The sort of childish bullying grown men will resort to under cover of a forum just beggars belief.

Anyway, to come back to one of the OP's questions, I think you will find Bağdat Street a bit bland and overpriced and not very Turkish in character. It's okay if you just want to meet up with mates who happen to be in the area, but probably not very interesting to someone new in town.

Well said, tarte tatin. Well said.
This might serve as an example as to why few people actually post new threads here on the Turkish forum. You ask a simple question, and are attacked by wolves who lie waiting behind their laptops.
You hit the nail on the head, tarte. I am a writer. I have written over 120 English readers all soon to be published. I also write exams, placement tests and newspaper articles.
Probably the number one reason I rarely went out was the fact I couldn't stand being in an enclosed area with rude Turkish smokers blowing smoke in my face. I suppose this has changed.
By the way, Ollie, big 3bc stands for the big 3 of the NBA Boston Celtics- Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Obviously you aren't a fan.
Thanks for the info on Bağdat Street, tarte. I can't wait to peruse the backlash you will surely be reading here soon.

A basketball fan eh? I'm going to be in Turkey for summer of 2010 when they're having the FIBA world championships. Have you heard anything about their preparations over there? Do you think it will be hard/expensive to get tickets?

I also agree with tarte tatin... It is sad the way some people have responded to the OP's question. Sad and a bit disgusting actually. Sometimes it is better to save some opinions.. especially the really stupid negative ones.. no need to stink up the joint with that crap.

As far as where to take your visiting friend... the sky is the limit here.. there seems to be something for everyone and now that there is no smoking in restaurants and pubs... those places should be little better than before.. but i really hate the ones that play very loud music.. that is something i really dislike.. it is not easy to chat/converse and .. I would like o see a ban on too loud music.. hehe.. Laughing

Wolf number one attacks!
By the way, in the US, a *beep* is right up there as being one of the most wretched names you can call a woman. For one who does nothing but insult, a taste of your own medicine must have really got your dander up, Ollie.

I'm all for getting out and seeing the place you live in, but I have to agree with Tarte here- Ollie you knew absolutely nothing about this guy before you started harrassing him- no wonder people are hesitant to ask for advice on here- amazing anyone even reads this stuff, talk about jaded.
I too have been here a long time and used to go out a lot- then for several reasons I stopped going out so much to bars- partly embarrassment at the behaviour of fellow foreigners, partly because I have a serious job that requires early morning starts, partly because I now have a young family and many Turkish friends who enjoy going to cafes, good restaurants, cinema and evenings in with friends. That means that if a friend visited who was interested in checking out the bars and meeting women, I wouldn't know where to take them these days. Hell I must be sad. I think sadder though are those who clearly spend ALL their time on this forum.
As for you big3- I guess you could try the 'bar street' in Caddebostan- more restaurants than bars actually, and more civilised than Kadıky's Bar street. Or maybe go somewhere like Anadolu Kavağı for an evening- nice fish restaurants. The Asian side has a lot more families so less bars of the women-meeting type, so maybe Beyoğlu would be best for that- try the Asmalımescit area near Tnel- lots of great restaurants and bars. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice Sam. Wouldn't it be funny that after all of this my friend decided not to come?
During my 11 years here in Turkey, I have replied to threads here at Dave's a total of four times. I have started two new threads, both of which appear currently. Of course, my lack of internet know-how for many years played a role in this.
Dave's is a great site; one I visit often if only to read the threads. It's lamentable that for some it's a place to exorcise their inner demons. Isn't that what psychiatrists are for?

That's odd. It says next to your name that you've posted 61 times.

I blame 9/11

It seems to me, James, that you get pleasure from harrassing people who have a direct connection to 9/11. If you check back on your threads, each one of them mentions that date. Now who is dwelling on it?

The maths is not impossible James. The poster has made 9 posts on this thread already. He has started two threads and contributed on four others, if he averages 10 or so individual posts on 6 threads you reach a figure of 60.

Anyway for someone who keeps chipping in, and is by implication claiming to have a wonderful social life, you have not recommended one venue that would be a good for a night out. Perhaps you are really spending too much time online.

Big3bc, before your friend arrives, perhaps you should venture to Beyoglu and see for yourself which bars have the sort of atmosphere you are looking for. I personally like bar street in Kadikoy but think the bars there are much better for going to with a group of friends.

Thanks for the backup again Tarte. I will keep your suggestions in mind.
James was right though- I completely forgot about a thread I had posted on health clubs. MOD EDIT
