so, what are our priorities when choosing to apply somewhere
mine's the academic program the place offers and then the goals that come with it.
yes, we all have our expectations.. i wouldn't mind workin'in a place with a filthy toilet although challenging program that sends students to heaven..after they graduate with me
cheers and beers to the mac allegedly polycentric EF as well as its broken chain with all its filth that's been caused by the rusty intestments of some really honorable biz people

they're more expensive than most cities in china because its a fairly wealthy city (big cities everywhere are expensive). even then, its really only the flag fall that costs more (RMB12.50), the meter runs about the same as many other big cities in china. 10km in a shenzhen taxi in daytime will cost you ~RMB30. it's much worse at home. i come from a small city of 80,000 and took a taxi there this past summer - my 10km trip cost me $22.50 (~RMB140). that's EXPENSIVE. |
Yes, but unless your making USD cash here in China you're making money in good old RMB...so don't compare prices in the States to prices in China...apples to oranges, mate! I would say that for someone making money in China (Shenzhen) taking a taxi would be considered expensive. But that's just me...I try to save as much as I can every month.
For me it's always like this: salary vs. cost of living and a RMB foreign teachers salary in Shenzhen does not last as long as in other big Chinese cities (having lived both in Shanghai and Shenzhen I can attest to this fact).
But, hey, you just might have different spending habits. |

i should have made my point more clearly above. in my small city back home, a 10k taxi ride cost more than $20 while a ride the same distance in a large (more affluent) city costs about the same. to me, that's expensive and i don't think you'd find this situation occur in china.
you claim taxis in shenzhen are the most expensive in china. you're right - but they're the same price as they are in beijing and shanghai (china's 3 largest/most expensive cities). this is true of prices for most goods and services in cities of comparable size in any country. that's apples to apples. |

all this talk about the expensive cost of living makes me want to ask one thing. What would be a decent salary per month to live comfortably in Shen Zhen. How much would a typical middle class person be making in Shen Zhen. I have a friend/acquaintance making only 3000 a month. I am assuming EF's will be making roughly 5000-7000 rmb a month if not a bit more. Also, does anyone know if apartments will come fully furnished and if water and electricity is included in the rent as well?
And trying to stay on topic, I'd like to know if others on this site have ever gone through EF in Shen Zhen and how their experiences where? |

12K per month, up or down a few K depending on how you define comfortably. |

It's a good starting salary, but you have to factor in that it was quoted BEFORE tax...so write an e-mail to EF and ask them how much in tax you will be paying. Since they don't offer an accommodation allowance as part of the salary, you'll be paying quite a bit. Just find out for sure what your AFTER TAX salary is like.
As for living costs, it all depends on your lifestyle. If you're a big spender all the money will be gone in a month. If you factor in monthly trips to HK, you'll spend even more. A brand new 2-bedroom apartment in the Nanshan area will set you back around 3000 to 4000 RMB per month and utilities (power, water, phone, internet and gas) are not included in the rent. Of course you can rent something older and cheaper or rent a room instead of an apartment, but for me the place I live is very important, so I'd rather spend the money on nice digs. Daily life costs can be high as well--when you factor in transportation and food for a day (plus if you're a drinker, you'll spend loads in bars).
Remember that when you're renting an apartment you will have to pay, up front, 2 months deposit and one month rent...so make sure to have enough starting cash to cover this (plus living expenses for the first month). Also, if you use an agent to find your apartment, you will have to pay their agency fee.
Anyway, 12K before tax is a nice start, and once you get here you'll see how far the money will take you...just don't hope on saving much. |

thanks for the encouragement englishgibson!. Just to clarify, I am male! lol
So i emailed EF back with about 10 questions. Hopefully it doesn't make them retract their contract offer!
one more question. Will the Z visa allow me to travel between HK and China freely and will i be able to look for work with a Z visa in HK? |

hopefully you didnt ask questions that require a lot of time/thought to answer. that could have sent your resume into the trash. i dont know about EF but it seems that many universities/other schools in china dont like people asking too many questions at the outset.

your Z visa allows you to enter china once and its valid for only 30 days.
but luckily that Z visa will be replaced with a residence permit within 2-4 weeks, that allows you to leave and enter china an unlimited number of times. your second question, you can LOOK for work in HK with a Z visa/residence permit from the mainland, you just can't PERFORM that work in HK with that document. dont worry, you probably wont have much time for that after your regular job.
as for the salary, 12000 is more than enough to live well in shenzhen (almost anywhere in china for that matter). if you're a "big spender" one of two things will happen: you'll be broke constantly, or you'll adjust your lifestyle. it isn't rocket science.
just plan accordingly and whatever you do, dont show up in shenzhen with no money in reserve (savings/credit card). if you don't like the job you might want out and history shows us that people who have no cash on hand have a hard time getting out of a bad job. plus some extra cash will make your transition to shenzhen a lot easier. I suggest a minimum of $2000-3000. |

thefuzz said something worthwhile mentioning.
Shenzhen has no 'culture' of it's own per say. It's a new city, having been built in the last few decades.
So everyone who lives there is really from all over China. |

Why would it be corrupt to be about the money? Im assuming that with that statement you would consider the content of the job before being concerned with making a living for your family. That is what I would call ill responsible. |

This is beautiful - "Im assuming that with that statement you would consider the content of the job before being concerned with making a living for your family".
I'd say EG is a professional who won't let people like BucklandPatrick "skim" off the top.
I wonder what happend to that topic? Perhaps the "advertisers" called in a marker because they didn't need/want the imminent bad press.
I certainly wouldn't shovel horse manure if my "family" needed money.
Would you, Chinatwin, or anyone else out there, shovel horse shit for a pittance?
I guess you just did, for free, here on Dave's. |
