Nobody has done that yet.

I'm assuming they don't have an interviewing system set up yet.

Yes. probably right, but only a couple of people have done the psych test and the general knowledge test. One has done the essay. There are about 40 of us who are doing nothing.

The essay's easy. I got 100 blindfolded. The Knowledge test and Psychological tests are difficult because you don't have enough time, cannot possibly answer some questions, or the answers themselves are written incorrectly.

I doubt there is any validity information for this assessment, but don't see any real harm in taking it. It's probably just some bureacratic weasel's justification for a job; nobody is likely to be deported for scoring low. But if you resist, I don't see how that helps anybody. Better to give face and just go through the motions. Nothing to lose sleep over.

I finally got the score for the writing test: "high scoring index is Topic, Expression, Content, Style, Grammer & Spelling"

It would have been too perfect if they would have misspelled "Spelling", but spelling "grammar" wrong is still classic.

I teach at a major university in Beijing. This is news to me. Bottom line: I wouldn't take it.

That's what I told the FAO here at first, that I wouldn't take it. He told me the Chinese government would circulate a "letter of criticism" if I didn't. I don't know what that is, I assume it's some sort of reprimand. Don't know if it's true or not, but I went ahead and took it. It would have been funny if they weren't so serious about it. I'm still trying to find out how to do the online interview. I'm getting a lot of conflicting info about that and the e-address on the evaluation comes back as "undeliverable". Anybody know anything?

I never bothered with the online interview. I just cut-and-pasted my results and sent them to our waiban. Told him that I might not have enough knowledge and am probably psychologically unfit, per the results. However, I am a perfect writer, as my 100 score on grammer firmly attests!

I'd love to see the letter of criticism. It must be a frameable keepsake, no? Full of Chinglish I'm sure.

Actually, the letter of criticism would be about the administrators of the college, not the offending teacher. I didn't make that clear. If doing this STUPID test will save them a little embarrassment, then I'll do it.

Tests really mean something to the Chinese. I don't want to take a test written in Chinglish that I can't prepare for. I'm not happy about having my test results and personal information 'available for future employers'.
Who will have access, and how can they help but make a judgement about me if I score 25 or 30 on some portion of the test?

I don't think this is as benign as some have suggested. FTs may think it's just silliness, but our Chinese bosses and colleagues will look at the test results differently.

Here's a conversation I had with the FAO at this school about the evaluation (I cut and pasted it from a chat we had online):

21:12:57] opulence: Are you there?
I asked many FAOs, and they all told me to give up the Online Interview. So, give it away.
21:23:49] Tommchone: Okay; I hope everybody knows what they're talking about. Oh, well, if I get deported, it will be a new adventure.
21:41:12] opulence: I dont know what is your exact meaning, but I am sure the Government of China will never deport you for your not having done an evaluation.
We Chinese have a strong sense of looking around to what others are doing and how, so since so many other forengn experts have not done it, you can also neglect it.
21:43:34] Tommchone: "Deporting" was actually a joke; but according to the SAFEA, if the Evaluation is not completed, the teacher can't get a work visa. I'm not worried about it, I just call all of this nonsense "an adventure".

I can't find any reference to this Evaluation test on SAFEA. Did it go away? Anyone have the exact link to it?

Apparently there is at least some reference to this on the SAFEA site (just discovered now by pasting the above link in Google).

I can just imagine being told to take the test by my superiors otherwise I will have the veritable Sword of Damocles metaphorically hanging over my head in the shape of threats (hypothetical or not) to withdraw or else not renew my FEC and foreign residence permit.

Will it wash with my extended Chinese family, one of whose members I married seven years ago and who is on the verge of giving birth to our second child? I think officials wouldn't dare threaten to put the main family breadwinner out of work just because of a "test" - my Chinese wife and her parents would fire every cannon at them in order to get them to desist from what she would consider to be their downright stupidity if they even so much as contemplated trying or even hinting at it.

Maybe expats with spouses and children born and living in China can be exempt from this so-called test! Very Happy
