Like Orrin, I also, am aged 64. Have been working in China since 2002 - am hoping to remain here until I turn 70 ! The only time that I have been rejected for a job on account of my age was with a uni in Fujian province just over two years ago.I have had no problems elsewhere - am currently teaching at a uni in Zhejiang province (contract has been renewed twice), and have also taught in Jiangxi and Sichuan provinces.
I'm quite aware that many (most ?) unis, etc, usually specify an age limit (usually 60) in their ads. However, people over 60 should not be too worried by that - if you are well-qualified and experienced, unis will certainly consider you.
Possibly, the educational authorities in some provinces (eg Fujian, maybe also Guangdong, if Orrin is correct) might have an age limit for FTs, but I'm sure that they would overlook such matters if a particular uni/school is experiencing difficulties in getting someone (esp. if the uni is in a remote area, and that the FAO has good guanxi (sp?) with the local bureaucrats/Party people. There are many rules re the employment of FTs (eg the "5-year Rule", "applicant must have a degree", etc) - yet, haven't we all have heard stories of non-graduates getting teaching positions ?
In another thread, someone has mentioned that many schools are reluctant to take on the over -60s because of health insurance issues. Maybe, the time will come in the not-too-distant future when, as a condition of employment, a mature-aged FT will be required to show proof that he /she has taken out a private health insurance policy.

one rule that seems to be true is that rules always have exceptions. that's even more true in china than it is in our countries, where networking/connections are very important.
what you suggested above seems to be a simple solution to a problem that some schools have with older teachers. in fact, additional health insurance would be a good idea for all of us. i know my school provides health insurance for us FTs, but i'm not sure i would trust it in the event of a really serious illness/accident. |
