If he chooses to just come and hang out for a while, can he leave the country after his 90 days, get his passport stamped somewhere and then return?
Depends on his nationality. Look at the MOFA site again. (Hard to believe you looked at the other link to the same general site but didn't catch what MOFA means.)

Do not overstay your visa! Apsara is right about those penalties. It's not hype. A few years ago, some students accidentally overstayed just a single day and were in trouble.

And, yes, many people are in a similar situation to you. Their solution may be just to quit and go home, or hustle and get that next visa lined up before expiry, or leave for a short time and then return as a tourist to start the job hunting process from scratch again. Take your choice, but do not overstay!

If your contract expires after your visa does, then tell your employer so he can re-sponsor you. If he balks at the situation, tell him you plan to stay in Japan and continue working but for a different employer after you are through with him, and the new employer will take over sponsorship.

Glenski, while I realize now what the acronym stands for, I gave only a quick look at the title and subheadings and went right down to the body of text before closing it up and sending along the link to my contact. I'm trying to provide assistance to someone else while in quite a stressful state over my own situation. I'm not at my best. I appreciate all your help but your tone could have been better.

Just for an update to you all: I'm safe on the visa. I know it seems incredible that I didn't connect this either, but my visa also expires a year after the day I arrived. I now understand why.

I remember being quite confused when I noticed my first visa said "three months" on it. I didn't bring it up to anyone then because my boss at the time assured me I had 3 full years. Indeed, not only did I renew my first job but I entered for my second job on that same visa, and was offered renewal there, too, leaving only because my mother passed away. So I never questioned the timing.

Now, with no renewal, I knew I had to check and finally realized the three months mentioned on my stamp refers to the time I had to enter Japan after the visa was issued. So yes, my contract expires before my visa does. It doesn't solve my immediate problem of finding new employment but at least I'm safe there. Now all I have to do is find someplace to go by December or I'll end up living at an airport somewhere.

Thanks for all your help.

Your not the first person to be confused by all the wonderful stamps and dates... Glad that at least that issue has been solved. It's not much, but it's one less thing to worry about.

I hope you find a new job.

I think you misread my "tone". I was incredulous and astonished, not browbeating or condescending. Sorry you took it that way.

Best of luck to you and your friend.
