| Also, does anyone know the situation with facilitating your income with additional work? whether it be private english teaching or anything else, is there a niche for english speakers in japan? I'm thinking of english newspapers, magazines etc. which I would be interested in getting involved in. |
Some employers try to bully/cajole teachers into not taking on private lessons by putting a clause to that effect in the contract. It's unenforceable and potentially illegal. What you do in your off time is your business, not theirs, unless it actually interferes with your duties. They just don't want you pirating your employer's students and taking away money. Be discreet.
Can you do work other than teaching? Yes, provided that it falls within the acceptable description for your visa. Since there is more than one visa for teaching, you'll have to say which one you have. In any case, when in doubt, just file for the "Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted".

| And to reiterate my earlier question how hard is it to find accomodation in tokyo if I am unhappy witth the flat Shane/saxoncourt give me? |
C'mon! It's Tokyo! What would you say if it were London or New York? Plenty of housing available, but you just have to find it relatively close to work and within an affordable price range. See if your employer will serve as guarantor, otherwise you'll have to look for the relatively rare (but growing number of) places that don't require a guarantor. Mind you, whatever an employer provides, it will probably be furnished, and unless you get a guesthouse or LeoPalace21 apartment, you're going to have to furnish it yourself. Everything from curtains and bedding to kitchen utensils to fridge, washing machine, stove, and light fixtures. |
