At present, since the new immigration laws earlier this year, UK universities (and language schools) are under great pressure to qualify as Tier 4 sponsors.
To be a Tier 4 sponsor, you must be an education provider that offers courses of study to students, but the courses must be accredited. At university level, you must be inspected and have valid accreditation by QAA and/or Ofsted. Language schools must be accredited by a British Council scheme, Accreditation UK.
At universities, accreditation includes being a member of BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in EAP), and all staff must have a relevant MA and the DELTA.
This may explain why they didn't accept you - but they could have told you! |
Sorry, but where did you get the information about the need for a DELTA as well as MA? Do you have any links? There are currently three UK universities advertising for EAP posts at the moment, and none are asking for both the DELTA and MA. I've also worked for three different universities and have been fine with an MA. I'm also pretty sure that BALEAP don't require both DELTA and MA for accreditation that's what the accreditation document on their website says as well. |

If one did have a DELTA (or the Trinity Diploma in TESOL) and then discovered that even that was not enough for somebody's purposes (one could cynically say that the "somebody" has both the Diploma and the MA), one might feel obliged to undertake a master's degree simply because "somebody" wanted it as opposed to wanting to do one for one's own continuing professional development (CPD).
I don't think any accreditation body would necessarily demand that people possess both of these types of TESOL qualification, lest it be cynically accused of being litist, yet my experience, as a jobseeker, was with the three tutors who wanted candidates to have a DELTA (and they made this clear to me in their post-interview e-mail), not with any accreditation body, in spite of the fact that I had by then accumulated two master's degrees in education, one of which included a TESOL module.
Another university (one in Scotland) advertised for a summer EAP pre-sessional post and I made it absolutely clear that I do not have the Diploma. Nevertheless, I was actually invited to an interview, this time a telephone one, thankfully. However, just before it was due to take place, I received word that the start of Term 1 of the new academic year at my full-time employer in China had been inexplicably moved up by a fortnight, so that meant that, unfortunately, I could not take any job even if it had been offered to me.
This was rather a nuisance, but at least it showed me that not everybody responsible for recruiting EAP tutors at universities in the UK seems to insist that candidate possess a Diploma! |
