Nevertheless, all our students undertaking both the International Foundation Year (i.e., pre-bachelor's) and Pre-Master's Programmes apply to universities in the U.K. (and, in the case of a few IFY students, in Australia) via the England-based consortium that acts as a clearing house in much the same as the England-based Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) acts as a clearing house for Year 13 (final-year high-school) pupils applying to university.

Chris, very interested to know how many of the students get accepted to the UK.

I can't quote a figure for the International Foundation Year (IFY) programme I speak of in a previous post, but I can say that 29 out of the 31 Pre-Master's Programme (PMP) students completed the programme successfully in the summer of 2009 and were, indeed, offered places at England-based universities to pursue master's degree programmes.

Out of those 29 that passed how many do you think actually reach a post grad level (as displayed in their video)?

As I said before, my colleague and I do not actually watch the videos because we have to make judgments and award grades in several categories before calculating an overall average there and then. The video recordings are then sent to England where they are ultimately judged by people working for the consortium of universities, up to three of whose individual members our students have applied to and perhaps received conditional offers from. Ultimately, an academic board over there has the final say, whereas we no longer do, having basically done our bit back in the class.

In any case, the threshold pass grade is 40% because it is meant to be based on the fact that 40% is also the threshold pass grade for postgraduate work at UK universities; certainly, when I did my two master's degrees in education, which were awarded by the Open University, the threshold pass grade was 40%.

Inevitably, judgments are highly subjective even if we do have to have criteria to go by and asking me whether the students have reached a "post grad level" is also highly subjective since 40% appears to be good enough to pass and, hence, go on to postgraduate study. This is one of those unsatisfactory situations where "objective" grades have to be allocated to "subjective" activities such as presentations.

Needless to say, as with almost anything concerning assessment, there are some who do really well and some others who barely scrape through, while everyone else is somewhere in-between.
