I've seen one guy's blog where he posted his AEON essay. I couldn't believe he got the job interview (and eventually job) with some of the quaint things he wrote. But, what can I say, I couldn't get past the essay part with them, so he must have been better.

Wish I still had mine, but I think I just typed it onto their website and off it went.

There actually was an Indian guy at the Aeon hiring group session that asked if he could bring his wife and kids. Set the standard for the rest of us quite well I thought!

Also I'll never forget at the GEOS interview when the inevitable question about sick-leave/health insurance came up. The GEOS answer seems to be, 'In Japan people tend not to get sick'. Shocked

Keep in mind that AEON says they cut 60-70% of applications from their essays alone, so make sure you write a good one!

A good Aeon essay would go something like this:

It has always been my dream to work in Japan. I am very committed and the idea of 'light sales' makes me very excited. I can speak and write in my own language. I am not just coming for the manga/videogames and apparently easy schoolgirls. I will not run away before one year is up.

That should do the trick Smile

A bad Aeon essay would be something like.

I am have love Japan becorse I am always been a Nintendo fanboy. I have bin study Inglish for ten yeer in Nigeria. I have a Phd. I belief that selling peeple stuffs they don want is a sin. Can I bring my wife?

Qualifications do not matter for an eikaiwa job beyond the necessary BA in anything. In fact an enthusiastic young graduate may be employed far more easily than an experienced teacher with an array of MA's and Bed's. They are most interested in enthusiasm, as this is what keeps the punters coming in. Teaching competence is waaaaaay down the list as you are expected to rigidly follow their 'method' anyway.

hahahahahahaha! I just had to voice my appreciation. Excellent examples. Laughing

"If the market is flooded, why are there so many job listings?"

Please excuse the following skeptical post--I shall respond to the original question with this question: how "good" are all of these job listings really?

Regards,

That's the real issue! I see plenty of job ads, but they are for PT/per-lesson jobs (with descending hourly wages) and "semi-full-time" jobs that pay below the Y250K standard and somehow still end up being 40 hrs/week in the office. Ugh!

There are jobs available for okay salary if you have a TESOL diploma or degree, speak some Japanese and have experience teaching EFL/ESL.

There are crap jobs if you don't.

Good luck.

Thanks though, Glenski.

I realize that, but beggars can't be choosers in a flooded market sometimes.

Good point again. In my case, I just married in November and my wife has a job in the area. I am in Gifu-ken and about 30 min from Nagoya. Some of the Nagoya schools do not want to to pay the transportation costs from Gifu.

I'm not complaining per se at this point. I am leaving one job (having problems with the owner) and have received a few offers. Will make a decision this week.
