Believe me, I'm not basing my opinion on anecdotal research. My friend has just completed his TEFL in Phuket in October and has had exactly 2 interviews. None of the 'graduates' that finished the TEFL with him have found jobs yet.
MOD EDIT |
There could be other factors involved of course (how many grads, how hard they are looking, their job-search approach, other qualifications, etc.).
I'll soon find out. I'm newly certified and in Thailand, but am waiting out the holidays to do an intensive search. I'm not that worried, because I'm well willing to go elsewhere for work. Still, Thailand is my top choice, and I'd be disappointed if jobs really are as scarce as you say. |

It is very quiet this time of the year.
Check out school year that will give you an idea to your question. |
So what is the best time of year to look for a job in Thailand? |

I believe the public schools start up in October, so September would be a good time. But language institutes hire year round.
How easy it is to find a job is going to depend on a few things including what kind of qualifications you have, and where you are willing to teach.
I flew into Thailand on a 2 month tourist visa, took the CELTA and got a job the week after it ended. I taught in Rayong and they sorted out my visa & work permit right away. It's not exactly the hottest spot in Thailand but it was near the beach and not too far from Bangkok. It seemed like we were always looking for new teachers. I know two teachers were hired sight unseen while they were still in the US, a couple of teachers were recruited from offices in Bangkok and a whole bunch were recruited through teachers who were already working there.
So while you may find the market is saturated in Chiang Mai... I agree with others, try a smaller village or non-touristy city. Teach for 6 months there while looking for another position someplace else. |
