In regards to the part about people getting in who can't even name the capital of their own country, I am going to treat this as hearsay for the time being.

Wait, was that quip meant to not be taken literally? Smile

No, no. Unfortunately not. It really happened.

Going on my own experience of interviewing, about 1 in 10 applicants for JET in the US these days is what I would call a fanboy. It's interesting to see how that has changed so quickly over the last ~5 years. I still don't want them going anywhere near My Japan. Wink Smile

G Cthulhu, I hear you. When I come across the types in Japan who are soooooooooooooo into robots, manga, anime, etc., I give them a wide berth.

Cool

Ok, to each their own. But the types you just described tend to love it here a great deal and represent a good chunk of the folks who come here.

I don't think so. One in ten sounds about right. Maybe there's a bit more in JET, but of those who stay long term, I would say that even one in ten sounds very, very high.

So am I completely buggered because I have teaching experience, relevant education, TESOL cert, and have worked/studied in Japan before? Shocked I was really hoping this sorts of things would put my application towards the top.

What's wrong with being into those things? I don't think it's any worse than the ones who come over here for the women. And then there are those that are coming for the money.

I'd imagine that the people coming over here to study the language or experience the life and culture here are actually the minority group if you total up all the people who came for other reasons.

Besides, I'm a huge fan of all of those things and more. I'm not a guy nor particularly heavy and liking the things I do wasn't my reason for coming out here... do I get stuck in with this category as well?

I don't think it's such a bad thing to be interested in these things. It can help you relate to the kids (if you are teaching kids). And my ability to get the students in my all-boys special class to use grammar structures to talk about the likes of Kamen Rider, MGS, Resident Evil, Bleach, etc, have most certainly proven effective. They are simply far more interested in "Do you like pump-action shotguns?" "I don't like the semi-automatic sub machine gun." or "Raiden is killing in the kitchen."

When did you live in Japan and how long for? There's a rule that you can't apply if you have lived in Japan for more than so many years in the last decade or something. I can't remember the rule exactly.

Do you really teach/say that in lessons? I recently got a complaint because I was discussing a news story about a crime. Another another student brought it up, I gave an opinion and the other student complained about me.

Don't get me started! Rolling Eyes The student who complained actually thought I was expressing violent desires. No, just discussing recent news in Japan in order to motivate my students. Ok, sorry, back to food and movies. Rolling Eyes

Well since they are talking about their favourite weapons in videogames we are playing, it wasn't a problem. And the JTE told one of the boys that if he could describe the what Raiden was doing in a screenshot from one of the gaming magazines he is always reading, then I would be allowed to tell him where to find the bomb expert in the part of MGS2 that he was stuck on.

2 of the boys in that class have extremely bad ADHD. The JTEs in charge of that class are glad if they can simply keep them sat down for an entire lesson. They do want to study, but can't concentrate on things they find boring. So we give them the grammar structures using concepts that do interest them and stick in their heads, then later get them to subsitute the shotguns with hamburgers, the machine gun with science, Raiden and killing with Koji and cooking.

In the last 5/10 mins with that class I just have free chat with them. The JTEs believes its good communication and listening practice for them, even if we are only talking videogames and anime. They use a mixture of often very broken English, Japanese, gestures and drawings, but that doesn't matter since it's more just fun time so they enjoy English and see it as useful.

Maybe I am off on this one. Actually, what surprised me after coming to Japan was how many of my fellow foreigners had no real knowledge or even interest in Japan. Granted, I'm a total Japanophile, but many of my co-workers seemed thoroughly uninterested and even a bit antagonistic towards the culture.
I really wonder what they look for in the JET interviews. Back at Nova, they looked for a pulse. Maybe a necktie as well.

I never said that there was anything wrong with being into those things. It's just that those interests are not my own personal interests, hence, the giving of a wide berth.

Yep, it's time to play the waiting game.

If you do get the notice that you will be interviewed for the JET Programme, you can check out a few links with a Google search and/or YouTube search.

Here are a few links about the interview:

Hope this helps.
