Dear desultude,

In support of your observations (which, by the way, agree with mine - great observers think alike) may I suggest the following link:

How a British jihadi saw the light
Ed Hussain, once a proponent of radical Islam in London, tells how his time as a teacher in Saudi Arabia led him to turn against extremism

Ed Husain is a proven liar who sucks off the British government by playing the ex-extremist card. He has zero credibility amongst British Muslims.

Dear Stephen,

"Ed Husain is a proven liar . . . ."

I'll take your word on that, But even a "proven liar" can sometimes tell the truth. And a lot of what's in that article squares pretty well with my observations during my time in Saudi.
Of course, he's telling only one side of the story and generalizing like crazy, but I know for a fact that much of what he describes is true.

Regards,
John

Hello,

I would like to get some feedback on the best places to apply for as a newbie. I have a bachelors of social science degree from a Canadian University, and will be completing the CELTA Program in the next couple of months. I speak english at a native level and have absolutely no teaching experience. It's Saudi or bust for me so I hope there are some opportunities there for candidates with no experience.

Thanks!

Folks, I am no expert on the KSA -- not yet. However, I have been in the ESL/EFL game for a long time. It's interesting to see these newbies to the field who obstinately go against the collective experience of highly experienced (sorry for the equivocation) teachers.

Just let him see how it really is. It sounds like this guy doesn't want to take anyone's advice on here.

He is clearly going to get a crap job, but he doesn't care. He'll find out soon enough.

And when and if they ever get his paperwork processed and get his passport back to him, he will flee by the dead of night- if they haven't canceled his exit visa already.

I guess everyone misses the point here! I did not ask whether I can get "a good job" in the Kingdom with no experience. I asked whether I can get a "job" in the Kingdom with no experience. I am a recent graduate and jobs in the financial sector are hard to come by. If I have to get paid less and work that much harder, then so be it. I always wanted to work in Saudi and I guess I'll have to suffer the consequences. Beggers can't be choosers!

Thanks for all the input though I definitely won't be expecting what I thought. Ya'll have enlightened me with quite a bit of information and I am grateful for that.

Your eyes will be opened. You will see the world, yourself and your brethren in a different light.

Are you ready for that ?

How will you react to the "Mecca Syndrome" ?
(cf the "Jerusalem Syndrome" experienced by some Christian pilgrims travelling to "Al Quds Al-Sherif".)

But be careful not to be like the dog chasing the car, who doesn't know what to do with it when he catches it.

I know many people who have landed a job in KSA with no experiance. And the pay is not that bad either. Many recruiters ask for experiance but they contact you even when you dont have the listed requirements.

Dear faizayassin,

" I know many people who have landed a job in KSA with no experiance. And the pay is not that bad either."

Would you mind specifically defining "not that bad?"

Regards,
John

They recieve enough money to live on, tax free and accommodation. To them its not that bad compared to the high taxes and living costs they get in the UK.

Dear faizayassin,

Hmm, not too specific - and, by the way, are we talking about EFL teachers?

Regards,
John
