i havent had time to read all the posts above very closely, but if you need a new Z visa, then have the new school send the paperwork to you wherever you might be between now and the time the new job starts. ensure its indicated on the Z visa paperwork that you can get the visa in Hong kong. once the end of feb rolls around, you get the Z visa at the china visa centre in wan chai, then make your way to the mainland and then to the place where the job is.

if your old school wont help you out, and the new school doesnt care till the beginning of march, then just sit back and enjoy the next six weeks somewhere else.

@Ever-changing Cleric (nice name, btw...or handle? Don't know the lingo...)

This might be what ends up happening. The school has told me that they won't get the paperwork together until they return from the holiday, so if I leave the country and can't get back in until they send me visa paperwork, that's their bad business decision--so long as they actually send me the paperwork.

I suppose if they want me to come and work there, they'll do it.

I still don't like the idea of going abroad without a visa to return, because all my stuff is here and I have nowhere to go, i.e. I live in China and that's that.

Thanks. Hmm.

Two choices:

1. Apply for a 30 day L visa as an extension to your RP on 30 January. That should take you to 2 March. Just make sure the school and you apply for the new RP before the L has expired or have all the paperwork for an application for a new Z visa in Hong Kong.

2. Go to Thailand as suggested and enjoy the sun. You can get an L visa in Bangkok before you go back to China. But you still might need to go to HK to get a Z visa.

Either way, You are going to have an L visa so it all depends on your new employer and the local PSB's relationship whether they can get you an RP without going to HK.

Thanks. Given everything that's happened up to this point, I think this is my only option. (I *could* leave the country but really, really, really don't want to do that.)

Where does one go to apply for the L visa? The Exit/Entry Administration? I'm having trouble getting an answer out of anyone.

General update: At this point, old school says it's new school's responsibility. New school says it's old school's responsibility. Extensive harassment of old school led to them actually calling PSB and asking...PSB said it has to be done via the new school and they aren't having it.

Heading to the PSB in person ASAP to try again.

looks like you're not off to a great start with this school with their "we're going to enjoy our holiday before we worry about you" attitude. usually if a school wants to screw with you they at least do it after you arrive before they start making life difficult. keep your eyes out for other warning signs in future just to safeguard yourself.

@Cleric,

Don't I know it. I really want to be in a specific city and that is tying my hands a bit. I've never accepted a job with a looming issue like this before.

Yes go to the exit/entry bureau/PSB on 29th or 30th and take a local with you. Just say you are going to do some travelling. You might need to show proof of funds so take that too. A credit card would be enough

Thanks a lot. That's about the best practical advice I've had from anyone.

No worries. Remember you can renew your L visa for another 30 days if things go pear shaped later, with the new employer. Good luck

Update:

The local PSB says they can't help me at all, not one bit. They suggest I go to the PSB in the city I'm moving to and get an L visa there.

Is that even possible?

Right on the desk at the local PSB there was the form that would convert a Z visa to an L visa. I pointed this out. They still said no.

WTF!!!

I am going to call new city tomorrow and ask the PSB if I can do this. All the same, does anyone know? Can you convert a Z visa to an L visa OUTSIDE of the city of issue of the original visa? 'Cause that's what the PSB just told me to do.

Latest question: The PSB in my town says they can't/won't give me an L visa.

Can I just go to the PSB in the new town and get an L visa there?
