| Yes, mine also shows "Instructor" which means I can work for public schools, i.e., high schools and elementary. The Specialist/Humanities visa I believe can only work with "eikawa" type, conversational private schools/companies. |

Careful with that "only".
I could be wrong, but I think with an Instructor visa you can't work for conversational private schools or companies, or as a translator.

Shiori is correct. The Humanities visa is not just for eikaiwa, you can also do translating and proofreading or work in finance, IT etc without having to apply for special permission. You can't work in high schools, universities etc, but it's definitely a much "wider" status than Instructor. |

I guess I just got turned around here. Since, as I mentioned earlier, they told me I was getting a COE specialist visa. This seemed odd as it wouldn't allow me to work for them as an ALT. But, now, I have the COE that says instructor so I guess I can only work as an ALT.
I'm guessing communication was a problem at Matsusho if the person I was in contact with wasn't sure of any of the specifics.
Thanks for the information so far everybody.
If I take this COE to a consulate, say this week, will I be able to get the visa stamp in my passport? Or would not having a job lined up be a problem? Would it be possible to take the COE with me over to Japan to apply for jobs that specify I need to be in country? |

If you have any sort of work visa, you must work most of the time in the field that it is specific for. Humanities visa is a vague one there, but if a teaching outfit sponsors you, that's the field.
If you want to deviate (do side work, e.g.), you can but you'll probably need this special permission.

Yes, you will get the visa stamped in your passport when you bring the COE in. It's a half-hour job at most. Once you're in Japan, you also should get a reentry permit from immigration, or you will not be able to leave the country and return to Japan without losing the visa status. Single reentry = 4000 yen, multiple reentry = 6000 yen.

Technically speaking, you have an employer, and that is enough. They must have provided something which stated your hours and salary (it's required), but apparently they don't have to specify location.

No, the COE is linked to the employer who hired you. If you want to work for someone else, you have to transfer the visa sponsorship. |
