I stand firm on the age thing: why not have a 55-yr. old veteran of battle as opposed to a 22-yr. old useless univ. brat?

The role of JET in public relations for this country, for one.

Nothing wrong with having a degree on JET. What I'm suggesting is that it's NOT the be all & end all of the whole deal.

But then you'd be openning the gates to flood of applications from people who left school without achieving a decent level of English language skills. For the UK at least, you only need to look at recent education related news to see that many are leaving schools pretty much unable to read or write (or count, but not really relevant here).

JET would then have to introduce a formal English test to be done before the interviews, because it's amazing how well even the spelling and grammar check function on any word processor can hide near illiteracy.

seklarwia: Sure. But I would think it would be damned tough to pass a CELTA/TEFL course(a real one, not the online ones)without being able to read and write!

Having a CELTA/TEFL doesn't guarantee you'll be a hotshot EFLer. My argument is that it'll probably mean you'll be a better bet than the sociology major w/no teaching experience.
