I have heard of the AA degree + tesl diploma alternative to the four year BA degree. I think that will work in some counties here. I don't think it does everywhere. It is an alternative if you only intend to work in Taiwan -- and only some parts of it at that. The BA is the industry standard qualification in most countries. Strongly consider completing it if esl is something you might want career wise.

As a response to a point raised by EOD earlier, America not long ago deported a youngster by the name of Elian Gonzales under similar circumstances. Perhaps this makes me a "cronie," as Aristotle puts it, but courts in both Brazil and Taiwan awarded custody of the little Taiwanese-Brazillian boy to his maternal grandmother. It was only when his relatives here took him into hiding, defying the court order, that the police acted here. The case is not proof of "two steps back." Most countries' authorities would have responded in the same way.

Be advised that in the current situation that there are no garantees for any teachers on Taiwan. Stay out of kindergartens for a few months until this nonsense ends.

Thanks Taoyuanteve. I think that you may have provided the answer to my question there. I am based in Taipei, and always have been. I realize that things are done differently down south, and this might just be one of those things.

Wonder, still waiting for some advice from your experience.

Thanks so much for all your input!

On a somewhat unrelated question... Since my boyfriend won't be able to teach, he was thinking of going over to study. Maybe take a couple of Manderin courses and do some odd jobs. If he wants to stay for the year, does he go over on an extendable tourist visa? Is an extendable tourist visa a multiple entry visa? We've been trying to research how exactly he can stay for the year, but we've read a lot of conflicting things. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
