It doesnt surprise me at all that they would suddenly slash teachers' hourly rates of pay with some BS explanation. I think they must have realised that the new hourly rates were actually...shock horror...a reasonably generous wage! Laughing

The rates went up just a short time after I left ET, and to be honest I was quite surprised at how much they went up, considering I was only on 16 liras per hour, I would have gone up to around 25 per hour.

I think after a while those suited monkeys up in the HQ must have realised how much their hasty generosity was going to affect their own piggy banks. The 'economic crisis' excuse was convenient for them. ESL is quite a robust industry, and things have to be pretty bad for people not to fork out to learn English if they deem it essential to their careers. Its just such a pity that, as the other poster said, they are paying such huge sums of money for useless certificates that command no respect at all...(well not entirely useless, you could use it along with kindling and logs to make a nice fire).

I deeply appreciate all of your responses to my original post. I did not realize that the issue of English Time had already inspired so many lively discussions on this forum. Your information -- bulgogiboy, was especially helpful. I have already decided not to accept the job offer. Thank you again.

The new wage was just a desperate (short term) atttempt to keep teachers from fleeing.

ET has no clue how to improve a terrible book. They are too prideful to get rid of "their" book, so at least this way they could retain/attract teachers.

I was there for the "new money." We couldn't believe it. What was incredible was teachers with less than a year's experience or on line Diplomas getting 25 ytl an hour. Many people who had resigned had no problem running back.

For a school like ET the revised rate (about 20 TL/hr) sounds ok. I think lesser experienced teachers are getting around 17 TL. However, you still have to put up with management that is clueless about solving classroom problems.

This is why schools like British Side and EF will get the better staff and keep them.

It is no surprise that British Side has at least one CELTA trainer and one DELTA trainer actually teaching there. How many other schools can boast that?

Wow people ran back to ET after resigning, for the money? Ewww. I could never have done that, it was a matter of pride, and principle. I couldnt have gone back there for 50 ytl per hour, I hated the manager at ET Ankara branch so much. What a reptile he is...

17 that is tough living.

When you consider that they were paying 25 last year and I didn't notice the ET teachers living a life of luxury and the cost of living has gone up.

17 is 7 pounds an hour-assuming you average 100 hours a month which is a lot when you consider no pay for holidays, sickness, class changes, visa runs etc. 700 pounds a month. I earned more than that 15 years ago at a lang school.

If ET is doing 17/hr that's not too bad. I make 18/hr and am managing to save money for travels - I do get two weeks vacation a year. I still manage to eat out at restaurants a few times a week too and I'm not budgeting that much.

What TEFLers will accept is truly unbelievable. Not bad. 2 weeks holidays a year????Eat out twice a week in a country where one of the few cheap things is eating out.

OP: kazazt is right in that you're not going to be able to save much money for things like repaying student loans, paying for kids' college, buying a car, buying a house, or anything like that. If you don't have any debt or dependents though, 17tl an hour is manageable though hopefully you can find something a better. Your school's administration can play a big part in making your life easier or harder, so beware!

Not being able to pay for:
kids college
buying a house

are the understatements of the century. On that money you could not even afford to have kids let alone feed clothe house and educate them.

I agree. That's why I said "if you don't have any debt or dependents."
