Dear jdl,

Ah well - nobody's perfect, at least not in EFL/ESL and certainly not on Dave's (with the possible exceptions of Dave himself and Mr. K.)

Regards,
John

Wow, is heroin use quite common among TEFL teachers in Cambodia? I know alcohol abuse is endemic within the industry, but I didn't think large numbers of teachers in certain countries were smackheads??

I met so many bonkers people in my time as a TEFLer, it's hard to pick a winner. One of my Canadian co-workers in China emailled his own embassy with a threat to bomb them over a passport renewal dispute. This was in the post 9-11 environment as well. He lasted less than a week at the school.

Judging from the nature of the posts, probably the oddest I have encountered are the many staff who:

*honoured their contracts
*arrived on time for work and class
*had no substance abuse issues or mental/emotional issues or at least stayed on their medication
*contributed to the positive environment of the school
*were well trained and worked hard
*smiled and made light of the day
*were coperative and went 'above and beyond'
*never wrote on 'Dave's'

Dead accurate. Really sad.

Spent two weeks in Cambodia last Summer. Nice country but it's impossible to walk more than 2 metres down the street without being offered drugs, women, motorbike transport, cigarettes or various other types of contraband. I was semi-relieved to return to the relative anonymity of Latvia after that.
