I am Canadian and I worked with a British teacher. I think most of the students and many of the Mexican-born English teachers weren't good at recognizing different English accents. It was more a question of which one of us could be understood better. The students (4th graders) had to adjust to the British teacher because in the previous years they had American and Canadian teachers.

I met a Scottish teacher here once and I could not understand about 30% of what he said. I can only imagine student reactions to him...

Met a Brit that was turned down for a call center because his accent was too "strong".

And there are plenty of Americans that have unsuitable accents (for example heavy southern accents or use "urban speak").

But learning American English makes the most sense in Mexico as the US and Mexico have far close ties than Mexico has with the UK or any other Commonwealth country.

Some schools (meaning whoever does the hiring) have prejudices.

I think a clear English accent is the most important thing.

Thanks for everyone who helped me. I've read your answers and I appreciate it.

I have abolutely no accent when I speak English, whatsoever. I'm from the South, but people accuse me of lying when I tell them that! I hate that; I know where I'm from. However, I can understand why people are surprised when I tell them I'm from the South. People often guess that I'm from a large city, such as Chicago or somewhere in California. When I speak Spanish people say I have a tiny vestige of a foreign accent.

I'm from the South, too, and this happens to me sometimes. I had one person ask me to "do" the accent (This person was American.). I don't even think I can fake a good southern accent, and there are so many!

I mean no offense to anyone from here, but I live in NC right now and when we moved here, I couldn't understand what people were saying!!
