Ever wonder why the traffic is so bad in Mexico City?
An infrastructure built 40-60 years ago and people that don't even know what carpool means.
With easier lines of credit, more and more Mexicans have cars. And they almost always drive solo.
Driving here is very high stress. Big rigs and buses fight each other openly and gas trucks jostle with taxis for the "pole" position.
Traffic cops only enforce laws when they can get a bribe out of it.
Drivers Education here consists of paying a few hundred pesos and getting a Mexican Drivers License without taking an exam of any kind: Written, vision, or driving.
They are the worst drivers I have ever seen. Hands-down. |

Well, I haven't lived in any other countries except my own, but I have to agree. I don't think it is "Mexico-bashing" to say that the standard of driving here, with a few exceptions, is appalling - and that's being generous!
As Prof. Gringo says, a lot of that is down to the system, which means there is no need to get any education.
BTW, I was once trying to devise a translation for "roadcraft" but gave up, realizing that the term was redundant here

You dont think that Darwinian selection swiftly takes the worst drivers off the road?
----------------
I have one offspring who learned to drive here in DF. Two more to go, both now of driving age but I have been putting it off because the idea of nursing another novice driver terrifies me. |

It also takes the lives of innocent people.
As an example of the problems in Mexico: DUI (drunk driving) is only an infraction, not a criminal offense. So drink and drive all you want, it's only a fine/bribe anyways!

Not true! The officers in this operation don't accept bribes (they have a quota to fulfil). There is no fine payable and the penalty is immediate arrest and 20-36 hours in the cell. I know, because my brother-in-law was a victim just before Christmas. |

Exactly, and if you hurt somebody when you are driving drunk, you better be able to not only stand, but run very fast, because the consequences won't be pretty. |

Oops! I just realized that my last post may have read badly. I didn't mean that my brother-in-law was the victim of a drunk driver. He WAS the drunk driver... (Didn't hurt anyone though!) |
