And I get tired of holier than thou Emirati moms/women whose husbands/brothers/uncles are parked outside the liquor store in their SUVs, passing the "list" and money through the heavily tinted barely cracked window!
The level of hypocrisy in Gulf countries concerning alcohol consumption is sometimes really unbearable, let's face it.
Alright, alright, I get it: it's THEIR country and THEIR culture...

It's funny how little things like this build up...
I've always compared it to the Victorian times... the hypocrisy of anything goes as long as no one see it.

| The times I've noticed that Mr S, the wife or mother was actually in the car with them if not driving their sons/husbands/brothers there! |

On the other hand, it's interesting to note that as I was at a Mexican restaurant at the Dubai Mall, I was "accosted" by a former student of mine who was accompanied by a host of friends, but prominent in the crowd was the brother of the former student. It was interesting as he was VERY attentive to the conversation and when he got hungry and had to leave, was replaced by another brother who supervised the entire "confrontation".
The student and I were very comfortable with each other. But, I found it compelling that the brothers were sooo attentive, whether or not they understood the code. It interested me that they were sooo attentive to their sister who unabashedly was addressing an unrelated infidel in order to retain the family honour.

P.s.- I like these folk lots! Their culture is, on a daily basis, amazing to me! |

I always liked the juxtaposition of the old (illegal - you didn't need a license) "hole in the wall" in Ajman - right across the vacant lot from the law courts. |
