Try Medan, some other Sumatran cities or even central Java. Schools in Bekasi and Tangerang, may also hire you, as they tend to find it difficult recruiting teachers..

Really, Medan? One of the students in my TESOL course was from there, it sounds like a nice place. I'd expect they don't pay very well though. From what she said, it's pretty undeveloped, and there seems to be a strong correlation between development and pay.

OP, i think it is great that u have had things published in magazines, but unfortunately this wont get u much in the ESL world. When u used the word pretty extensive experience, i automatically think of 5 to 10 years of experience when i am reading thru CV's and they mention that in their cover letter.

i admire your courage at 18 to travel halfway across the world to work for a year and respect that u are willing to get a CELTA so that u have at least some idea of what u are doing in the classroom.

right now it is a schools market. there are lots of people applying for jobs. so the schools can afford to look for people with experience. and they are a lot less likely to hire teachers that dont meet age and education reguriements when there are plenty of people that do. why would they want to bribe officials to look the other way for your age when there are plenty of people that they can get that wont cost them the extra bribe?

another thing no one has mentioned is the time that u want to come.... august/september. This year, the islamic holy season of rahamdan starts mid august and Idul Fitri will be in mid september. this is a notoriously slow time for language schools and most of the students are fasting and take breaks from the additional burden of extra lessons. a lot of companies also dont schedule business classes during this time period.

however, dont let this dampen your enthusiam. keep sending out resumes to language schools. it doesnt cost u anything and u might get lucky. real enlish in batam is a miserable place to work for, but they will hire anyone with a pulse because the majority of people break their contracts. also a handful of EF are not very particular who they hire. also try the swara group, they are large and hire lots of teachers and are used to paying bribes to immigration. there is a member here that is the dos of the BSD branch. i am sure he can fill u in on more, though he doesnt do the actual hiring.

good luck

Its great your enthusiasm to come over to Indonesia. As a writer myself, it often for some strange reason has a negative effect on getting employed in Indonesia.

So i would recommend you do not put that in your CV. However you do have alternatives to Indonesia, were Visas are cheap and easy to obtain, whilst you can work several part-time jobs.

I heard in China, there are English teachers who are 18, working for Universities. Also in Cambodia, were finding full-time contract work is almost
impossible, but theres plenty of part-time work.

Salaries in Medan are actually on par with Jakarta, whilst language schools in Bandung often pay more than similar schools in Jakarta. I have worked in "less developed" Indonesia, and know I earned much more than teachers in many schools in Jakarta.- and had great weekends away.

Schools which spring to mind are BLCI and EF in Bandung, which pay more than EF Schools in Jakarta or IELC in Solo which pay the same or more than EF in all Jakarta.

I admit these are the entry level schools in Indonesia, but its a great start if they can hire you. Good luck.

Good luck even trying to get a contract with them. The school is steadily going downhill, it's a front for money laundering from Singapore (I've seen the books!) and they'll put you to work on a tourist visa until you're collared by immigration. Search for any of the other threads about the school.

I 100% agree. We had a teacher at my old school that could NOT get a kitas because she was 18 or 19.
