Dear NCTBA,

"The more I type...the more I feel that I'm dating myself..."

Well, what the heck - it's cheap, you don't have to get all gussied up, but, of course, you still won't respect yourself in the morning.

Regards,
John

If you are a Muslim, Madina is the best.

I get to drink zamzam water everyday and pray in the Prophet's mosque.

You can't buy this experience in America.

I love it Smile

Well, I think our poster, Simpson, drinks ZigZag water which contains the Zinc element (Zn2), and in the morning he will find himself partying naked in the free-nuclear zone of Jumeirah beach of Dubai! Laughing

For fun, getting to know people, shopping, cultural experiences and anything else.

Jeddah, Khobar/Dhahran, Riyadh are the best vis-a-vis the aspects you mentioned.

Hail, Najran, Jizan, Buraidah, Qassim, etc are the worst.

If fun for you includes non-beach nature, then the first 3 cities I named are useless. Go to the ones in the second list, as well as Taif, Abha, Baha, etc.

If fun for you includes the beach, then stick to Jeddah and Khobar/Dhahran. Yanbu as well.

Shopping, the first list flat out.

Getting to know people, again the first list.

Cultural experiences, Jeddah and Khobar/Dhahran are probably the best, as you can have access to people from many tens of countries easily. If cultural experiences includes archaeological sites for you, then go to the 2nd list.

Thanks for the information, but I don't understand the point above. Why are these cities more international than Riyadh, the capital?

Dear markcmc

Mostly for the same reason that, say, Chicago, is more "insular," less "international" than, say, New York or Los Angeles.

Cities in the interior of any country are less likely to have as much of an "international flavor" as cities on the coasts.

Regards,
John

If you are a Muslim, Makkah should be the best, as Makkah is way more important than Medinah from a theological point of view.

Just come off a beach in Jeddah which can compare to any I have been on in Thailand, Jordan, Singapore, Korea, Cape Town and a few other countries...

Maybe it's just me but Jeddah seems to have a lot more to offer than Riyadh.

I was thinking about Cleo's comment regarding choosing to stay in one of the three big cities and I agree and disagree. I have met teachers here that don't really appreciate Jeddah because they haven't stayed in the 'villages like Buraidah, Najran etc (a Saudi I met today called them villages lol).

I don't regret my stay in Buraidah, I have so many stories to tell of being chased my Muttawa etc. I experienced a Saudi Arabia that people in Jeddah, Riyadh and even Khober/Dammam will never get to see and I am so glad I did. I met some lovely Saudis and I walked away with a million stories. Now as I lie on the beach and tan, shop at Danube, walk around in huge malls, eat Crispy Cream Donuts or at Chillis, TGI's, On the Border or Applebees life seems almost normal in comparison...

You mentioned everything except the teachers you and your husband worked with in Buraydah at Qassim University. Also, forgot to mention why you escaped from there.

If your vision of Paradise is a place where you get Krispy Kreme Donuts, I feel sorry for you.

A real paradise would be- not only where you can get these krispy kreme donuts, but be able to eat as many as one likes and not get sick or gain any weight Smile
Now that's a "paradise", not mine, but those of you who like to eat krispy kreme donuts, yuk!

OK, no wisecracks please, but what third-level institution in KSA has got the best academic reputation and presumably the most motivated students? KFUPM?

Yes, KFUPM.

In fact, it is the only one known outside the country for academics.

(setting aside KAUST for this debate)
