Hi Geoboz,
Very useful, shame the money is not more, but good to know its enough and that they take care of the necessities; I too have been impressed with the DoS and its good to hear the other teachers are all professional and focused. I will be accepting the role and am due to come out between the 20th and 28th Dec, any other advice, or a list of things you or other teachers may want form the UK will be warmly received
Thanks
Jon |

jon, i am not sure what you have heard about what to bring here, but i would suggest bringing polo-type shirts and very light weight cotton or linen long pants for work. also, i would also suggest bringing a comfortable pair of sandals (open toe is ok) rather than dress shoes and socks, as some of us here have run into problems with extreme heat and foot ailments (fungus-like problems). and preferred toiletries should also accompany you, as we do have these but the selection is limited. of particular benefit would be Mitchem Womens deodorant (YES!) because it is the most effective on the market. (my brother the chemist told me this, and i now believe him).
i truly hope you enjoy your trip and time in makassar.
peace and joy,
george |

Dear George,
Cool I will get a few bottles my next trip to Tescos, have you tried the mens? I have lived in the tropics before so fairly clued up on what to bring, do I need to bring a mozzy net? Or are they there or not needed?
Sounds as if you will not be there for the new term?
Ta

hi jon,
just a quick note. when you get here, the security guy at the school can arrange for you to rent a scooter for travel here in makassar. my scooter is an automatic 125 cc, and it runs great with little effort in this flat terrain. i pay 550,000 rupias for it, or approximately $60 USD per month. petrol is very cheap, running less than $2 usd per week. i am suggesting this because taxis here can gobble up almost 25% of the paycheck, and given the transportation limitations otherwise, a scooter might be the best way to get around. it also provides a lot of freedom to explore on your own terms as well, which i prefer.
no, i won't be here when you arrive, i am sad to say. but i do wish you all success and contentment with your new adventure.
peace and joy,
george |

GEO. what happened? why are u leaving? i thought u were happy there.
ps. u can buy a new motor scooter for about 400,000 monthly payments depending on the length of repayment and size of deposit. the school might have to sign a letter verifying that u work there and will be there for the length of the contract, usully repayment is 11 months.
good luck to both of u |

So what was all that stuff about 'giving the place a good shake'? You've lasted less than 2 months. |

I'm curious Geoboz is there something at the school that isn't right that perhaps others should be cautious of? Or was it just a case of it wasn't the right place for you? It does happen at times and there is no point staying somewhere you aren't comfortable. |

I'm interested as to why the plank who's singing the praises of this rather dodgy sounding outfit in Makassar is so sensitive about questions as to why he/she's leaving after 2 months-maybe his/her 'get out' is dependent upon finding a replacement? |

It concerns people if you are deliberately 'misleading' someone into joining this organization, just so you have an easier 'out' after only two months.
Something smells rather fishy! I would say 'beware' to the person/s thinking of joining this school based on your comments. |

Where are you off to now, Geoboz, if you don't mind my asking? |

Just wondering and asking for people that might be interested in the job. Isn't it better they go into a situation with their eyes open.
I know I'd be pissed off if someone had been singing the praises of a place only to find it was hell hole. (been there done that don't intend on getting another t-shirt)
On the other hand if you didn't feel you fit in at the place that is a different story. Really just enquired is it a well run place that someone else might like but you didn't for some reason or another. It's all down to personal preference at the end of the day. Nothing malicious in that is there? |

no misleading of anyone going on on my part. perhaps the suspicions of such are your "projections" of your own motives onto others. i am not sure why all of this has spiked so much interest, but it leaves me to wonder what else you do with your day. i have no need or interest in justifying anything i have said here to anyone. if you want to know more, why not apply and speak directly to the school and make a determination that way? as for me, i am off of this thread. |

Because you are such a colourful and well-known character in the world of ESL that people are always interested to know the latest goss. |
