Actually, I don't really see the benefit to living in Tokyo unless it is one of the luxury areas. You still spend a large amount of time on trains. The apartments are small and expensive. It can get a little clausterphobic. People are certainly no more friendly.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel I'm getting the best of everything by living and working in Funabashi. It's still very convenient for me to go to Tokyo, but I get to live in a nice apartment ten minutes from the sea and won't have to live my life on trains or buses. I'd also consider Yokohama to be a very nice place to live. I can't say that about Saitama or Ueno, although Ueno is a great place to buy shoes.
I'm in no way saying commute to Tokyo to work. That is the one level of hell that Dante forgot to mention. |

I am not saying that Meguro is cheap, but if you want to be close to Ebisu, give it a look. I do not just mean the stop on the Yamanote line, but Meguro ku.
My Japanese friend works at the Thai embassy in Meguro, and he was getting sick of taking the Denentoshi line home after work.
He was considering moving to Meguro some time in the future, and sharing a place with his brother.
He saw that rents at some places in Meguro have come down from what they used to be. |

I paid 55,000 for a 3 room apt w/loft in Kita-Narashino (Chiba-ken) a couple of years ago. No key money, about 40 minutes into Tokyo on the Toyo Rapid line. I thought it was a pretty good deal. |

Given that my p/t jobs are in the southcentral Tokyo area, and my girlfriend and I really like Ebisu as well, it looks like we're probably just going to bite the bullet, and spend some extra dough for a place in the area. Unless we can find an exceptional place of great value in another reasonably central location, it will likely be in our best interest. Living right here in the hub will not only be tremendously convenient but it will also be a much more enjoyable lifestyle. Being able to get around on my new scooter most of the time wll definitely beat the crowded trains and subways you can be sure. It's not a matter of being unable to afford a place that's over 180,000 per month. It is definitely affordable. It's just the idea of spending so much monthly on rent + the ridiculous amount of key and deposit money that drives me nuts. After visiting several realtors and viewing many places, it appears that we are not likely to find any great bargains in this area. At least not this time of the year. Therefore, it's either time to pay or say nay and head for the boonies. |

try J & F plaza for managed places or Kimi Inforation if you want an unmanaged rental. Used both and was quite happy nor was it sp expensive.
Sakura House arent too bad either and they have a lot of places. They work out too much for a couple though as they charge double for double occupancy. |
