Rather than start another inane thread, let me hijack this one with a related question. I see apartment rent listings that say "$500 (excluding tax)".
What is the situation with government tax on rental properties? How much is the tax rate? Who is responsible to pay?
Practically speaking, I have never seen anything like that. It seems in most countries, this is the property owners rental income and he has to deal with any tax implications. Here it seems that this is a tax levied on the foreign renter.
Can one of you grizzled veterans briefly explain the tax situation on property rentals and how that is usually handled in owner-tenant contracts? |

| Most appts are rented out by private landlords and NO tax is applicable. Some complexes might be rented out by developers or companies (particularly at the moment with few sales) and therefore there would be VAT payable. Not sure how much for accomadation but certainly no more than 10%. Could be just a bad translation: tax is sometimes translated in place of fees (condo fees,cleaning, security, parking etc) or just a greedy landlord trying it on. Negotiate and you'll probably hear no more of this. |

 Thanks for the quick response. Interesting that this may be different for private owner rather than business entity. And I can see where this "tax" might represent condo service fees for trash, security, ..... Sounds like it can all be negotiated away.

YES we DO earn a high wage).
There are other set-ups like mine to be found; just ask local people to put their ears to the ground. With the money I save, I fly to places on Air Asia and jetStar every month.

Have you even been out to District 7 - ever picked up a map and looked at it? Phu My Hung as you describe is a small portion of this district.
Colourless and Impersonal?? - I certainly enjoy looking from my balcony at the buffallo, chickens, river and farmland - overpriced definately not $500 for 3 bed apartment/pool/gym get real.
A long way from D1 - Perhaps I imagine the 15 minute ride into D1 each morning, or are you that lazy that 15 mins is a long ride and nasty ride to you?
I love people describing places they have in fairness probably never visited.
Here are pics of my place; 140m2, 3 bed, 2 bath - BRAND NEW 15 mins from D1, all Vietnamese neighbours, Pho Shops outside, various sellers nearby. For sure less foreigners than those apartments in D3.
Now does it really look that colourless to you?

Thank you 'surreycouple' - some facts rather than so much fiction to be found written by people like hot_rock. Even in PMH itself we can be in Thi Thap in 5 minutes (always D7) and find every kind of street restaurant and bar as well as local shops selling everything including the kitchen sink. And even in PMH we have an incredible amount of restaurants and bars of every kind from every nation in the world ...ok , people don't throw their empty Heinnekens on the floor or need to sit on 20cm high stools - but hey I can live with that now and again. Plus my wife (Vietnamese) would divorce me if she couldn't tell people she lives in D7!  |

People like HotRock have probably been here since they joined the forum; a few months max and think they know everything about the place.
I have only been here 2 years, signed up for another 2 and will continue to do so. I am here long term, am having a child in October and want a proper home where we can walk the dog, have clean air and enjoy the space of spare bedrooms for my dj/computer equipment. I certainly don�t want to live in a hot sweaty box room because wow its less than $200!
This is HOME now even if it was only 2yrs I want to be comfortable in my life and where i live. |

| Quite right, plus if anyone out there has a Vietnamese spouse, you know you need the extra space for visits from brother number 1,2,3,4...,sister number 1,2,3,4...cousins, uncles, aunts et al!....also, Vietnamese rooms are generally smaller but Vietnamese women like buying shoes as much as western women.....Imelda Marcos has nothing on my wife! |

Please don't respond, but I certainly have to wonder why someone would make a post like that. I guess we should all applaud your success. The view in that last photo looked pretty good to me.

Hmmm, wouldn't know. I've always taken care of myself and have not had to live in a squat. I guess you would know. |
