I agree with Greg that getting your foot in the door is mostly presentation and what kind of impression you make. Having a professional-looking resume (I've seen so many poorly prepared resumes in the states and in Mexico!) is the very first impression you make.
Once getting your foot in the door, having a sharp mind, a great attitude, and committment are key.
As for the TEFL certificate, I'd say it depends on what type of job you're looking for. In my experience, independently owned language schools don't ask for any paperwork (you'd probably be working illegally). National and International language schools could ask you for something. I don't think that CELTA carries more weight in Mexico than another TEFL certificate. I haven't found employers to be that scrutinizing. But the CELTA course could be a better course for your initial development. That I don't know. |

The CELTA seems to be somewhat more revered in SLP, probably because it has the magic word, 'Cambridge' written on it. Though in truth, a lot of Mexicans are surprised to find out it's just a 4 week intensive preparation course so I'd go for the CELTA over any other tefl cert.
The Mexican hiring process is not one that's really based on who is the strongest candidate in most cases, especially in a place where native speakers are in short supply. Right place, right time is more the norm here. Obviously for more sought after positions they'll be a bigger choice of candidate but then the one who gets it is probably a friend of a friend etc. y as se mueve Mexico. |

The tefl cert is much more relevant to immigration as it is what will justify them giving you an FM3 to work legally.
Language schools generally ask for no more than a native speaker with a pulse. |
Very true, even in DF! |

I'll second what Gregd said... I'm currently in the CELTA course in Playa del Carmen and it has been a great learning experience. Yes, the beach is beautiful. But remember you will not have much time to enjoy it and get all your work done. |
