I've done the summer language camp twice, and pulled a summer-camp runner once. It is generally a grueling 2-3 week affair where at the end you will have a little bit of travel money, and make some friends. Yes, grueling because much of the work with young people is physical: chanting, dancing, games, marching them to activities all day long. Meanwhile, you get to have a temporary roommate in what are generally 2-star hotels at best. Coping generally involves heavy drinking and carousing at all hours, meaning your 2-3 week work stint is literally fueled by adrenaline, nicotine, and caffeine. So if you are nostalgic for your undergrad dormitory life you can live it briefly by working at a summer camp.
This summer we got World Cup and my country actually made it to the next round. So no extra work for El Chup this summer, no way! Even without World Cup, there's so much to see in just a few weeks.
If you want to try the camp experience, it won't hurt you. But if you ignore the camps, you might consider traveling a bit, and enjoying the long holidays of the expat academic life. |
