I had forgotten how frank a Korean stare could be until I was on a flight out of Seoul last night. This woman stared right at me. When I caught her eye, she smiled, I smiled, and she continued to stare.
It reminds me of something we Americans like to say about freedom- you are free to swing your fist, but when you make contact it becomes a problem. Her staring at me seemed sweet and innocent, and curious. I have stared back at various times at Koreans staring at me, but they tend to remained nonplussed and simply nod.
It goes with the territory in Asia, and we need to go with the flow. |
