Where in China will you be studying, and will you be there for summer?

In Nanjing getting part-time work in summer is a breeze, pay is about 100-150 an hour (most I ever got was 200 for 40 minute kindie classes), I guess privates would pay the same or slightly more, but IMO it's not worth it - cancellations, travel time to and fro and other issues would make me just pick up some extra hours at one of the numerous language schools around town.

I'll be in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, population roughly 2 million.

I hadn't thought of the logistical issues associated with tutoring. Last time my relatives handled all that for me. You're right it will be a pain checking for cancellations, negotiating hours and all that.

What do you mean there are plenty of part-time jobs available at language schools? Like non-contract, under-the-table part-time work? How does that work? I'm really too busy to make any kind of heavy and regular commitment.

Where are you going to be located OP? If you are Bejing or Shanghai there are tons of sites offering PT work. http://www.chinajob.com/individual/my_teacherlist.php is a good one, or you could just look on the craiglist page for that city. If you're somewhere second tier, I don't think there's much on the interwebs.

I've never taught private lessons but I read in another post that someone made the same amount of money doing private lessons as he/she did teaching at the university. That would sure be a nice way to supplement the income. I'm pretty sure in the contract I received this was forbidden though. But if the school is willing to set it up...it can't be that forbidden.
