I think the first thing to also consider is how many hours you are going to be expected to work for that salary, and how much spare time you will have to pick up other work.

It is generally easy to find tutoring jobs that pay 150 per hour. With more experience and connections, finding part time work that pays 300 per hour is feasible. Corporate trainers who have experience may even get up to 600/hour. If your work is not that demanding, and the hours are in the daytime, picking up extra work can always be an option for supplementing your income.

The salary I get from my visa job represents about 1/4 of my take home pay. For the last year, I have only had to work 6-8 hours per week for the semester.

Having say 4,500 in disposable income gives you about 150 RMB per day. It is feasible to live off of that, but it really depends on the kind of lifestyle you want to have and what you plan to do.

I have lived in Shanghai for 6 years. I know people who live off less than you mentioned.

For that kind of salary, I would not expect to work more than 20 hours a week teaching English. It seems that it would also be in a reasonable range for a kindergarden teacher who works Monday to Friday.

10500 is easily enough. 4000-5000 for an apartment if you live in puxi. 2500 is you live in pudong. 1500 if you live towards the outskirts of the city or a dump in the city
