How old are you? 22. IMO you ARE too young to teach anyway.

What have you seen or heard to make you think 22 is too young to teach? |
Yeah, must say this bothered me too. Whats wrong with teaching at 22? Thats the normal age to start a career. |

| Wayne, This thread is like a good read with the last few pages missing. Please tell us if you quit or not, and if not, how things are going now? Everyone else, please don't let Mrs McClusky divert the subject matter of this thread. -You 22 year olds just can't keep your focus!! - I'm kidding here! So, let's get back on topic, please! SHANE??!! I mean WAYNE??!! |

I did quit unfortunately. I already had while I wrote the original post. And I sort of regret it. I was being impulsive and immature and I let my frustrated emotions get the best of me, especially when one of my trainers said something that really ticked me off. I just abruptly walked right out the place in anger. I apologized to my trainers and asked if I could make a return by any chance, but by then I had already missed a teaching practice session and an external observation. One of them said unfortunately, it was too late and we all agreed that it would be better that when I'm ready again, I'll retake the course part-time. I think part-time would be alot more reasonable for me.
Meanwhile, although very disappointing, I've moved on and I think I'm going to get some experience first. I find out whether or not I get accepted by my Korean program in 2 weeks or so. I went into the summer applying for the CELTA course and this government-sponsored Korean program. So, I hope that I can be 1/2. That won't be so bad would it? If they take me, then I'll be gone for half-year to a year and when I come back, maybe it can be time to re-consider the CELTA. But yea, what's done is done. Can't look back. Still many great things to look forward to. =) |

It's not un-heard of, Wayne. There were two guys on my course who (on separate occasions and for different reasons) put their fists through walls. You've taken it in a positive way and I guess you will be able to make some positive moves in future - good luck to you.
And thanks for giving us the Rest of the Story (so far). Hopefully an Ultimate Success Story later on |

Sorry, but whilst the CELTA is challenging, its only four weeks.
On my course, which was taken in the UK, we had an American trainee whose dad died during her CELTA week 3. She had no chance to fly home until ten days later, so she stuck around and finished her CELTA. Whats more, she didnt mope around or expect any special treatment. Up to that point, she hadnt been doing so well either, having failed one teaching practice. But she still passed overall.
No one should drop out of the four-week CELTA |

| Yeah, he is, but it sounds like you've learnt something valuable from this. Whatever else might be said about your youth, at least you are still in a position to move on from past misjudgements. |

Don't give up on teaching. Sign up for a TEFL program and give it another go. Sometimes we all do dumb things. Trust me when I say that I have done a LOT worse than quit a CELTA program, but I am still alive!!!!
One of the best teachers that I know works down the hall from me and he is 23...... |

Man all this talk of failing or dropping out of the CELTA reminds me of my mid-CELTA crisis many people seem to have. I failed a lesson for explaining too much about a grammar point and becoming too teacher-centred. Oh yeah I was also a trainee with no prior experience.
The next lesson I passed but it happened again in the one after that and I remember the agonising wait for the results of the lesson that I thought I had failed. In the end the tutor let me 'just' pass that lesson (as the objectives were still met) and that gave me the faith burst I needed to power myself through the rest of the course. I remember after passing the final teaching component I drank so much in the evening that I had to wear dark glasses on the final teaching day of the CELTA (which I didn't have to teach on) and get some extra sleep in order to be able to focus on anything.
Not long now and I'll be fighting for the dreaded DELTA... |
